"Don't Start Now" is a song recorded by English singer Dua Lipa, released as the lead single from her upcoming second studio album, Future Nostalgia (2020).[6][7][8] The song was written by Caroline Ailin, Emily Warren, its producer Ian Kirkpatrick and Lipa, who chose "Don't Start Now" as the "natural first song choice" from Future Nostalgia to allow her to start a new chapter in her life. It was then released on 1 November 2019 through Warner Records on digital platforms globally and contemporary hit radio in the United Kingdom.[9] The song impacted the same format in the United States on 5 November. "Don't Start Now" is a nu-disco song with influences of Eurodance. The lyrics of the song involve Lipa addressing an ex-lover about moving on from a relationship.

Upon its release, "Don't Start Now" received favourable reviews from music critics, with many complimenting the disco influences and Lipa's vocals. The song was a worldwide commercial success, topping the charts in Croatia, Ecuador, Israel and Ireland, her fourth number one in the last country. "Don't Start Now" also reached the top ten in thirty-five other countries. It became her seventh top ten entry on the UK Singles Chart and her first top five entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number five. "Don't Start Now" was certified gold in Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Spain and the United States. It was also certified platinum in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and double platinum in Australia, Brazil and Canada.

An accompanying music video for "Don't Start Now" premiered through Lipa's official YouTube channel on 1 November. It was directed by Nabil and depicts the singer passing through both a basement club and a masked ball. In promotion of the single, Lipa has performed "Don't Start Now" at four music award shows, seven television shows, and two music festivals.

Background

"I chose to put this song out first so I could close one chapter of my life and start another. Into a new era with a new sound! It's about moving on and not allowing anyone to get in the way of that. It also felt like a natural first song choice as I made it with the brilliant same crew I made 'New Rules' with.

– Lipa, on her decision to choose "Don't Start Now" as the lead single from Future Nostalgia.[10]

Following the release of the expanded edition of her debut album, Dua Lipa: The Complete Edition (2018), Lipa announced a new single titled "Swan Song". The song was released on 24 January 2019, in support of the film Alita: Battle Angel (2019), and achieved moderate commercial success. Lipa stated at the time that she was in the writing process for an upcoming second studio album.[11]

"Don't Start Now" was written by Lipa, Caroline Ailin, Emily Warren and its producer Ian Kirkpatrick. The group had previously worked together on "New Rules", the sixth single from her eponymous debut studio album (2017). Lipa felt that the release of the song was a "natural" choice that would allow her to start a new chapter in her life, and chose it to be the lead single from Future Nostalgia.[10]

In October, she removed all of her social media posts in preparation for the release of the song.[12] "Don't Start Now" was then officially announced on 22 October, and was released worldwide on 1 November.[13][14] Following the release of the song, Future Nostalgia and its accompanying concert tour were announced in December.[15]

Composition

"Don't Start Now" is a Eurodance-influenced nu-disco track.[16] According to the sheet music of the song published at Musicnotes.com by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, "Don't Start Now" is composed in the key of B Minor and follows a midtempo of 124 beats per minute.[17] Lipa's vocal range spans from the key of A3 to D5.[17]

"Don't Start Now" runs for three minutes and three seconds, and has been described by music critics as a disco song.[2][3] The production features Lipa's "low-ish register [gliding] across [...] synths and electro-violin stabs", as well as the use of a "hollow, cowbell-like percussion".[18] Lyrically, "Don't Start Now" addresses an ex-lover about moving on from a relationship, with Lipa singing on the pre-chorus: "If you don’t wanna see me dancing with somebody / If you wanna believe that anything could stop me".[10]

Critical reception

Pitchfork's editor Matthew Strauss wrote that the "French bloghouse" production suited Lipa and praised the singer for eschewing vocal modulation, saying "her voice sounds stronger than ever".[18] Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone believed the song took Lipa's sound to "a higher level" and that she "finally finds her pop footing," regarding it as "the peak of pop catharsis," and among 2019's "most glamorous new tunes" and "strongest bass lines."[2] Paste's Rachita Vasandani commented, "It's funky and fun...—what else do we need?"[19]

In his review for Clash, Robin Murray viewed the track as "a super-infectious disco burner", noting "a Chic flavour to the songwriting, given a chrome-plated 2019 overhaul."[20] DIY's reviewer deemed it "an empowerment bop" and "funkier number than her former fare, replete with the kind of bass line Mark Ronson would be proud of."[21] Jon Caramanica of The New York Times found the song "effective but not overambitious", arguing that Lipa sells its "kiss-off sentiment with rhythm but not punch."[3]
