Gameplay

Spells

Note: Not all spells are available in all versions of the game.
  • Flipendo (all versions): triggers switches and moves objects, and in all versions except PC, is used against most enemies. Also learned in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Harry always begins the game with this spell.
  • Alohomora (all versions except PS1): unlocks mechanical locks, including those found on doors and locked chests. Harry learned this spell in Philosopher's Stone. In the PC version, Harry knows the spell at the start of the game. In the PS2/XBox/ GameCube versions, he can purchase it at Fred and George's shop.
  • Lumos (all versions): illuminates the caster's wand. Harry also learned this spell in Philosopher's Stone. In the PC version, Harry knows the spell at the start of the game. In the PS2/Xbox/GC versions, he finds it in Borgin & Burkes, in Knockturn Alley.
  • Skurge (all versions): clears Ectoplasm (an "unpleasant greenish substance left behind by certain ghostly beings", in the words of Professor Flitwick) out of doorways and off floors. Harry may learn this spell in Charms (PC version), or during a late-night adventure in Hogwarts (PS2/Xbox/GCN versions).
  • Expelliarmus (all versions): in wizard duels, deflects spells cast by your opponent. In the PC version, not available outside of duels. In the PS2/Xbox versions it is learned in Defence Against the Dark Arts, and can also be used to deflect locomotor mortis spells (see below) if Harry is spotted by a prefect. In PS1 versions, can only be used in cut scenes in at end of the duel.
  • Diffindo (all versions): "dead-heads" Venomous Tentaculas and Spiky Bushes, may be used to sever certain vines and hanging tapestries. Harry learns this spell in Herbology (PC version), or during a late-night adventure in Hogwarts, when Harry has to free Neville from behind the tapestry just outside the Gryffindor Common Room (PS2/Xbox/GCN versions).
  • Mimblewimble (PC): in wizard duels, causes your opponent to become inarticulate and unable to cast their next spell properly. Not available outside of duels.
  • Rictusempra (PC): stuns magical creatures and, in wizard duels, "knocks back" your opponent, causing them to lose stamina. Harry learns this spell in his first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson.
  • Spongify (PC): activates certain "Spongify" carpets, specially marked with the symbol of the spell. Harry learns this spell in his second Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson.
  • Avifors (PS2/Xbox/GCN): turns statues into birds. Learned in Transfiguration.
  • Incendio (PS2/Xbox/GCN): Harry shoots a blast of fire from his wand. Used to light torches, clear away spider webs, and in combat against spiders and fire crabs. Learned in Charms.
  • Locomotor Mortis (PS2/Xbox/GCN): Prefects cast this spell at Harry if they see him wandering around the castle after curfew or in restricted areas. It locks his legs and holds him in place until they catch up and discipline him. Harry cannot learn this spell.

Harry learns, in Potions, how to make a Wiggenweld Potion, which replenishes his stamina after he's been injured. The ingredients are as follows, in the correct order:

  • 1 pint of Horklump juice
  • 2 drops of Flobberworm mucus
  • 7 Chizpurfle fangs
  • Billiwig sting slime
  • Sprig of mint
  • Boom Berry juice
  • Stewed Mandrake
  • Drops of Honeywater
  • Sloth brain mucus
  • Moondew drops
  • Wiggentree Bark (not PS1)

He also makes a Polyjuice Potion, and has to gather the ingredients Bicorn Horn, Boomslang Skin and "a bit of Goyle". The potion turns him into Gregory Goyle.

Creatures and Threats

Fire Crabs
Turtle/crab like creatures that shoot fire out of their back-sides.
Giant Orange Snails
Poisnous Snails that will chase you. Their trails are also poisonous.
Gnomes
Gnomes are pesky creatures that will steal your Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans and knock down your stamina when they run into you. However, in the PC version, they are quite harmless and don't decrease Harry's stamina. They live in gnome holes, and they feed on Horklump Mushrooms.
Cornish Pixies
Also pesky creatures, electric blue in colour and will try to bite you.
Spiky Prickly Plants
Spiky bushes that will shoot spikes at you if you get too close.
Venomous Tentacula
Plant-like creatures with snapping heads, rather like a Venus Flytrap.
Horklump Mushrooms
Mushrooms that give off a purple cloud of poisous gas.
Bowtruckles
Stick-like creatures that appear to be made of wood. They guard Wiggen Trees and will throw Wiggen Tree bark at you.
Imps
They are quite like gnomes, except they are bigger, stronger, more aggressive, and they aren't completely naked. They also live in holes.
Ectoplasm
A green gooey substance left by ghostly beings.
Small spiders
Tiny spiders will crawl on you if you stand still for too long, but they are small enough to be squished by Harry's foot.
Large Spiders
They are a lot bigger than regular spiders, and take more to defeat.
Acromantula
They are bigger than giant spiders and can grow up to a great size. Aragog is the largest Acromantula, and is so powerful, he cannot be killed.
Slytherins and Snape (PC Version)

After using the Polyjuice Potion, it will wear off and you have to leave the Slytherin common room while avoiding Slytherin House members. If they do see you, you will have to make it out of the common room before they catch you, or Professor Snape will appear to expel you.

Items

Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans
Different coloured beans that can be found everywhere in Hogwarts and its grounds. You can trade these beans for other useful items.
Wizard Cards
These pentagonal shaped cards each have a famous Witch or Wizard on them. They come in bronze, silver and gold. For every 10 bronze cards you collect, you get a permanent stamina increase. For every 10 silver cards you collect, you can unlock one of the four locks on a door that leads to the gold wizard card challenge. Collect all the gold cards to complete your set!
Chocolate Frogs
They increase Harry's stamina when he is hurt, but they hop around a lot, so it's hard to catch them.
Cauldrons
If you have the ingredients, you can use certain cauldrons to make a Wiggenweld Potion.
Flobberworm Mucus
One of the vital ingredients to a Wiggenweld Potion.
Wiggentree Bark
One of the vital ingredients to a Wiggenweld Potion.
Nimbus 2001
One of the fastest broomsticks ever. You can buy it from Fred and George.
Quidditch Armour
It will protect you when playing Quidditch. You can buy it from Fred and George.

Plot

Template:Spoiler For a complete synopsis see Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter, after a miserable summer, returns to Hogwarts to begin his second year of training to become a wizard. All is not peaceful, however: Students are being petrified and there are rumours of an Heir of Slytherin being behind it all. Suspicion turns on Harry, but when Ginny Weasley is kidnapped and taken into the Chamber of Secrets, Harry is forced to go in and rescue her.

Characters

Note: not all characters appear in all versions of the game.

  • Harry Potter: a brave twelve-year-old wizard. Main character and only playable character.
  • Ron Weasley: Harry's best friend, usually seen leading Harry to class or to the Quidditch stadium, or in cut scenes. He turns into Crabbe (not in PC version) when Harry turns into Goyle.
  • Hermione Granger: a brainy girl who is rarely with Harry most of the game, except in cut scenes. She is Petrified (paralyzed, turned to stone) toward the end of the game.
  • Ginny Weasley: Ron's little sister, who Harry has to rescue at the end of the game. In the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube versions, Harry also has to find several things that she lost in Diagon Alley.
  • Fred and George Weasley: twins, older brothers of Ron and Ginny. They have a very minor role in the PC version, but in the PS2/Xbox/GC versions, they give Harry a refresher on the flipendo spell, teach him how to toss gnomes, and once back at Hogwarts, they open a shop in Gryffindor tower where Harry can purchase items like stink pellets and dungbombs, Famous Witches and Wizards cards, and the alohomora spellbook. The shop is only open at night.
  • Neville Longbottom: one of Harry's roommates; a clumsy, forgetful boy. In the PS2/Xbox/GameCube versions he gets trapped behind a tapestry, and Harry has to find the diffindo spell in order to free him.
  • Draco Malfoy: Harry's archenemy, usually found sneaking around at night.
  • Moaning Myrtle: a ghost who haunts the second-floor girls' bathroom.
  • Albus Dumbledore: the Headmaster of Hogwarts. While normally absent from a good part of the game, he features prominently in a cutscene in which he tells Harry that he does not think that Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. He also appears at the end of each day to announce the latest house-point totals.
  • Professor Snape: the Potions teacher. Known for being unusually strict, he is usually to be found in the dungeons, near his classroom.
  • Professor McGonagall: the Transfiguration teacher. Her classroom is located on the right side of the first floor.
  • Professor Flitwick: the Charms teacher. His classroom is located on the right side of the second floor.
  • Professor Lockhart: the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. His classroom is located on the third floor.
  • Hagrid: a very large half-man, half-giant, usually found in his cottage on the grounds.
  • Professor Sprout: the Herbology teacher. She teaches in the greenhouses, which are located on the right-hand side of the grounds.
  • Madam Hooch (PS2/Xbox/GBA): the Flying teacher. She teaches a flying lesson in an outside lawn area, and thereafter is always found there during the day if Harry wants to try to improve his score on the flight training course.
  • Oliver Wood (PS2/Xbox/GBA): Gryffindor Quidditch Captain. He calls Harry to his first Quidditch practice of the year, and thereafter is always found at the Quidditch stadium during the day if Harry wants to try to improve his practice time for catching the snitch.
  • Percy Weasley (PS2/Xbox/GBA): a Gryffindor prefect, older brother of Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny. Percy can be found in the Gryffindor Tower study room at night; he does not like to be disturbed, and will throw Harry out of the room if he sees or hears him. Unfortunately, the only way to reach Fred and George's shop (see above) is through the study room.
  • Peeves : A poltergiest that enjoys making chaos around Hogwarts. If Harry runs into him, Peeves will cause trouble for him until Harry has got rid of him.

Trivia

  • In the PC game for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, there is a background character named Marilyn who is a blonde Hufflepuff that collects beetle pincers. As an inside joke, in the PC game for the Chamber of Secrets, there is another extra, Arthur, who is stated to be Marilyn's younger brother and shares her strange hobby.
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was the last Game Boy Color game released in the US.
  • An endless glitch in the game allows Harry to hop on mid-air forever.
  • The PlayStation (PSone) version of the game is entirely different to the next-generation versions. The game was developed by Argonaut Games exclusively for the aging console. Firmly aimed at younger gamers, it is mostly made up of a series of mini-games linked by cut-scenes.
  • The musical score for the game, created by Jeremy Soule, was awarded a BAFTA Award for Best Score, Game Music Category. [1]
