Mall of Abilene is an enclosed shopping mall in Abilene, Texas. It is located in the growing south side of the city, at the southwest corner of the busiest intersection in Abilene. The location is at the intersection of Buffalo Gap Road and US 83/84 (Winters Freeway). It serves a 22-county area and is the only mall in West Texas. Five stores anchor the mall JcPenney, Dillard's, Sears, Best Buy, and Books-A-Million. The mall also houses the 15,000 sq ft Premiere Cinema 10. The mall's gross leasable area of nearly 1,000,000 sq ft is consists of a total of 179 stores, excluding the theater, 7 of which have a leasable area of at least 56,000 sq ft. It also boasts an annual foot traffic of 19.2 million visitors. [1]

Mall of Abilene was built in 1979, following a trend towards southern growth in Abilene, which was triggered first by available land and then by the location of Cooper HS, continues today. The mall received an extensive renovation throughout its common area in 2005, including an 1,100 square foot healthy kids play installed near JCPenney and Steve and Barry's in August 2006.[2] In the spring of 2007 a devestating 15 alarm fire destroyed the mall. In addition to the Abilene Fire Department several units from Dyess Air Force Base responded. The mall was completely destroyed damage was estimated at 22.3 million dollars. In the fall of 2008 rebuilding began, The new mall will add an additional 15 sq feet in space. Mall owners are in negotiations with a yet to be named new anchor. An new indoor rainforest themed food court will be added as well as a new indoor water park.
