Real Monarchs is the reserve team of American soccer club Real Salt Lake that plays in the USL Championship.[2] The team currently play their games at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah.[3]

History

RSL Academy coach Freddy Juarez was named Head Coach on December 23, 2014.[4] The Monarchs played the LA Galaxy II to a scoreless tie in their USL debut on March 22, 2015 in Carson, California.[5]

At the end of the 2016 season, Freddy Juarez was promoted to be an assistant coach for the Monarchs' parent team, Real Salt Lake and Mike Petke was brought in as his replacement along with Mark Briggs and Jamison Olave as his assistants. On March 29, 2017, Petke was promoted to Real Salt Lake's head coach following the dismissal of Jeff Cassar and Briggs was announced as his replacement.

On June 19, 2017, the Real Monarchs broke the All-Time USL Record with nine consecutive victories by beating Reno 1868 2–1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The club won their first ever trophy on October 7, 2017, claiming the USL's regular season title with a 1–1 draw against Whitecaps FC 2.

2018 Disappointing Season After choking the first round of the 2017 USL Playoffs by losing to the 8th seed Sacramento Republic FC in a plenty shoot-out the Monarchs were determined to make 2018 their year to win the USL Cup. During the off season the club repeatably stated their goal was to win the USL championship in 2018. 2018 was off to a great start as the Monarch began their championship quest, but it all started to fall apart on May 28, 2018 when their 2017 USL coach of the year Mark Briggs was charged with domestic violence of beating and abusing his girlfriend. The Real Salt Lake organization release Briggs as head coach and replaced him with a inexperience interim coach Jámison Olave who would coach the Monarchs for the remainder of the season. August 25th the Monarchs were in great shape. With a 17/2/6 record the Monarchs were leading the league with wins and points as the team looked promising to repeat as the regular season champions and be a top seed for the playoffs. But then, the wheels came off. In a traditional Utah sports let down the monarchs had a late season collapse in epic fashion as they finish the season going 2/1/6 placing them from once 1st place to 6th place overall in the USL final standings. But then it got even worst. Oct. 20th 2018 the Monarchs as a 4th seed hosted the 5th seed Reno 1868 FC at Zions Bank Stadium in the first round of the 2018 USL playoffs. The score was score-less up until stoppage time when Reno scores in the 92nd minute confirming yet another upset brought to you by the Monarchs who can't seem to manage winning a playoff game. After the final whistle with a booing crowd the monarchs walked off the pitch with their heads down knowing that they blow it once again. Hench closes the book on 2018 as a disappointed season.

Stadium

Beginning in 2018, Real Monarchs will play home matches at Zions Bank Stadium, a 5,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in Herriman. The stadium is adjacent to the training facilities and academy for Real Salt Lake.

Real Monarchs played their first three seasons at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, the 20,000-seat home of Real Salt Lake.
