Greetings, Ashbeckjonathan. I have noted that you have been hard at work adding categories for the broadcasters of various sports events, and several of these edits have popped up on my watchlist over the last several days. Are you aware of this Categories for discussion thread here, from April 2013, whereby a dozen such categories were deleted? You may want to review this CfD discussion before investing more time adding these categories. I suspect they will be deleted in the near future. == Paul Keels ==

Hey...I noticed that you've done a lot of work on the Paul Keels article. Two things...

*1. You have to use references with citations. If there's no references, then we have issues of WP:VERIFY, and believe me you don't want to deal with that. So I filled them in for you.

*2. A lot of the article looked like a word-for-word copy of Keels' bio...you can't have that, because that's a violation of WP:COPY, which is a major no-no...I fixed that for you.

But you've got to be more aware of these things in the future when you create or edit articles...I can't fix everything for you, and eventually somebody's gonna flag you for your issues.

Consider this a friendly notice to get some stuff cleaned up. Thank you.

**You're going to spit in my face?!?...All I'm trying to do is give you some friendly advice, and that's how you repay me? What you did with the "spit in your face" crack is a clear violation of WP:PERSONAL. Do that again, and I'm going to ask that you be blocked...you can't do that to people. Repost of Chris Shearn

A tag has been placed on Chris Shearn requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion () tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's discussion directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. If you believe the original discussion was unjustified, please contact the administrator who deleted the page or use deletion review instead of recreating the page. Thank you. Robbie Bullough

Yes, I created the article. I created the article because I feel that any announcer, regardless of the network they are on, deserves to have proper recognition, especially one that calls roughly 40+ sporting events a year plus acts as a sideline reporter for football and men's basketball. I used his interview with Deseret News as the main resource, so it didn't rely specifically on his BYUtv profile. I never got into an argument with anyone on it, and frankly I still don't know why it is being discussed for deletion. Compare that to Jarom Jordan, another announcer you probably haven't heard of. Bullough took over Jordan's responsibilities as the play-by-play broadcaster for women's soccer, women's volleyball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, and gymnastics last season. However Jarom Jordan remains the play-by-play announcer for men's volleyball, is the director for True Blue and the football pre and postgame shows on BYUtv, and serves as a Halftime Studio Host as well as the Bridge Show man during the WCC Tournament. I didn't do a page for him since all I have to rely on is his BYUtv profile, and I knew that would be nominated for deletion since it doesn't use an outside source.

I am fairly new when it comes to creating articles, but I did create two other sports announcers articles within the last year, Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler, here on Wiki. I'm surprised they weren't nominated for deletion since Bullough is being discussed for deletion. Both of them have focused mostly on regional broadcasts during their 19+ years as sports broadcasters, but I didn't hear anyone complain about them.

I did create all the WCC basketball team pages this year for both men's and women's basketball, and I've been thanked for the time and effort I've put into them, though I spend most of my time on BYU since they are my team. Bigddan11 (talk) 21:34, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question, I believe the common consensus was that Bullough didn't fully meet the Wikipedia qualifications for an individual profile page found on the Wikipedia: Notability page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(people)). I don't know what area they said was worthy of deletion, but I believe the common consensus, which I disagree with, was that he was not "worthy of notice" at thsi time since he works for just one TV station.

Hello Ashbeckjonathan, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

 • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
 • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
 • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
 • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
 • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied without attribution. If you want to copy from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Shadowjams (talk) 01:15, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Suzi Perry

Hi Jon (if I may call you that), and a belated welcome to wikipedia. Just a courtesy message to let you know that I amended a couple of your edits to the Suzi Perry article. Firstly, I removed the "Tennis Commentator" category as she only fronted the coverage rather than commentated on it (not something that you'd know if you hadn't watched the BBC coverage). Also, I moved the "Motorsports Announcers" cat tag to the bottom of the page rather than in-text. It still works (i.e. adds it to the category and lists it at the bottom of the page) if you add the cat tag in the text, but it's far easier to review and amend/remove cats as necessary if they're all in one place, so by convention we stick them all at the end of the page. I decided to retire from Wikipedia as Ashbeckjonathan in June, then I switched over to WisconsinBoyClevelandRocks228844, and then I edited as an IP editor since mistakes continued at my second account, and then I briefly retired because it was no use editing at any account, and I eventually came out of retirement and I am editing on this account, this time for good. The reason why I went to WisconsinBoyClevelandRocks 228844 is because I've been making some mistakes in some of my editing and it got worse on that account so now as I said I am editing on this account for good.

Two categories nominated for deletion

Hi. I wanted to let you know I have nominated two categories you have recently created for deletion here. Please feel free to add your thoughts to that discussion. Thanks, Resolute 00:01, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ashbeckjonathan, I mean nothing personal by the deletion requests (now expanded to include the other three sports), however the category structure has been well defined to note that individual performances are not a good reason to categorize a biography. For these broadcasters, they are certainly notable as broadcasters in their respective sports, but calling all-star or post-season games is not viewed as a separately notable event. Please see WP:OC#PERF for a more advanced explanation. (And believe me, I know the frustration of losing categories I thought were useful to CfD. It happens to all of us) Cheers! Resolute 13:25, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the best way to explain the reasoning is by metaphor. Consider someone like Billy Joel. He is notable as a singer, so is placed in cats like Category:American pop rock singers. But while he did play with the Philadelphia Orchestra for a time, it would not be appropriate to add a category like Category:Singers who performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, as that is categorizing a performer by a specific performance. Such categories are widely considered redundant or as clutter. So while putting someone like Marv Albert into Category:Basketball announcers is fine - like the main singer category - a category for calling an all-star or league championship game is the same as that performer by performance category. Hope that helps. Thanks, Resolute 14:12, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you understand, thanks! And as I said, I know all about this. I've had an entire category tree (like 150 categories) renamed by people who didn't understand that a word like 'alumni' can be used in multiple contexts, thus changing the meaning of every single one of those categories. It sucks, but sometimes consensus is against you. And I keep the Da Vinci quote on my user page because I like it and it relates to my user name. Cheers! Resolute 13:23, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment missed its target

Hi there, it looks like this edit went in the wrong place, as it did not refer to a particular category, which is what I think you intended. I've undone that one for you, and you might want to have another try at getting it in the right place. With all good wishes, DBaK (talk) 13:52, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message, Jonathan. Please click the link under "this edit" just above here and it will take you to the edit that I'm referring to. Its effect was to put in an appeal (to not delete a category that you like) in a place where it didn't refer to any one category ... I doubted that that was what you meant to do! :) Hope this helps, cheers DBaK (talk) 14:01, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Kelley yet again

Last month, I deleted the "Milwaukee Braves broadcasters" category from Bob Kelley's article. You responded, correctly, that the category shouldn't have been deleted since he was indeed on the list of Atlanta Braves broadcasters (which included people who had broadcast Braves games in Boston and Milwaukee). However, I questioned whether the Bob Kelley I used to listen to in the Forties and Fifties in Los Angeles should have been on that list in the first place. I've followed up on that question and here's what I found:

During the 1953 Milwaukee Braves season, there was indeed a Bob Kelly (not Kelley) who was a Braves broadcaster. He wasn't around during the 1952 Boston Braves season or the 1954 Milwaukee Braves season. According to a tribute to another Braves announcer, Blaine Walsh, in a September 12, 1985, article in the Milwaukee Journal, Walsh's voice lives in memory, by Bob Wolf:

"Walsh Joined Gillespie on the Braves broadcasts under unusual circumstances.
"When the Braves moved to Milwaukee from Boston for the 1953 season, WEMP and WTMJ were awarded joint rights to the radio broadcasts. Gillespie was an automatic choice as WEMP's man, having broadcast the games of the minor-league Brewers in 1951 and 1952, and WTMJ named Bob Kelly to work with him.
"Unfortunately for Kelly, it was standard procedure in those days to give a telegraphic broadcast of another major-league game whenever the Braves didn't play. Kelley had never done this before, and when he got stuck with a high-scoring game that dragged on for what seemed like forever, he fell hopelessly behind. Shortly afterward, he was replaced by Walsh, who had come in from WJPG in Green Bay the previous year..."

The SABR biography of Roy McMillan mentions a Bob Kelly as a "Phillies broadcaster", and I thought this might be the same person as the 1953 Braves announcer, but a search of the Phillies season Wikipedia articles during McMillan's playing days turned up only a Gene Kelly. The List of Philadelphia Phillies broadcasters also includes a Gene Kelly from 1950 to 1959.

So my conclusions are:

 • There really was a Bob Kelly broadcasting Milwaukee Braves games during 1953, but we know next to nothing about who he was.
 • He shouldn't be confused with the Bob Kelley who was a sportscaster in Cleveland and Los Angeles for many years.
 • Nor should he be confused with the Gene Kelly who announced Philadelphia Phillies games in the Fifties.

I am therefore making the following edits today:

Your comments are welcome! DutchmanInDisguise (talk) 17:00, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Kelly this time!

I don't think I could do an article on Bob Kelly, as you suggested. There doesn't seem to be any info on him beyond that mention in the tribute to the other broadcaster — Blaine Walsh — who called Braves games for 12 years and definitely should have an article. Try googling Blaine!

But you live in Oshkosh, don't you? Is that Oshkosh, Wisconsin, not far from Milwaukee? You should be able to find lots of info on any of the Braves' broadcasters. There might even be people still alive who remember them. Why don't you try writing an article on Blaine? I think I'll go back to looking for more material on the "real" Bob Kelley. Jeff Phelps

I took the liberty of doing major work on the Jeff Phelps article. It needed citations for the references, as well as some sentence structure work. If it had been left as was, it would have eventually been tagged for such things as WP:VERIFY and the lack of citations, so I spruced it up as to avoid problems for you later. If it's OK with you, I'd like to share the Barnstar I gave you for saving the Jeff Phelps article from deletion...you provided the grit (God's honest truth, it seemed like you were about to reach through the computer screen and start strangling people), but I provided the notability reference that led to Levdr1lostpassword dropping his deletion request...I want to think of this as a team effort. I think I pulled a rabbit out of my hat (or out of somewhere), but I have found a source which I think satisfied the WP:NOTABILITY problem which put the article up for deletion to start with. Levdr1lostpassword, the editor put issued the AfD to begin with, thought it was good enough so he withdrew his nomination for deletion. So unless something really out of left field occurs, I think I may have actually saved this thing for you. (talk) Vjmlhds 04:59, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indians and Browns

Yes, I've been to some games...so has Drew Carey. (talk) Vjmlhds 00:20, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't go to the "bottle gate" game, but I remember it clearly...Browns were hosed on that one. And for future reference, include a link to your talk page in your signature...It'll make it easier to correspond with you. (talk) Vjmlhds

Categories for sports event broadcasters

Greetings, Ashbeckjonathan. I have noted that you have been hard at work adding categories for the broadcasters of various sports events, and several of these edits have popped up on my watchlist over the last several days. Are you aware of this Categories for discussion thread here, from April 2013, whereby a dozen such categories were deleted? You may want to review this CfD discussion before investing more time adding these categories. I suspect they will be deleted in the near future.
