Pending changes reviewer granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.

Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello AmirahBreen,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Your account has been blocked indefinitely for advertising or promotion and violating the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use. This is because you have been making promotional edits to topics in which you have a financial stake, yet you have failed to adhere to the mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a form of conflict of interest (COI) editing which involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is strictly prohibited. Using this site for advertising or promotion is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia.

If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, please read our guide to appealing blocks to understand more about unblock requests, and then add the text {{unblock|reason=your reason here ~~~~}} at the end of your user talk page. For that request to be considered, you must:

  • Confirm that you have read and understand the Terms of Use and paid editing disclosure requirements.
  • State clearly how you are being compensated for your edits, and describe any affiliation or conflict of interest you might have with the subjects you have written about.
  • Describe how you intend to edit such topics in the future.

And before you go about denying this: I am looking at your UpWork. I see accepted jobs for articles that you have created. Because this block involves offwiki evidence, I have marked it as appealable only to the Arbitration Committee (you may contact arbcom-en@wikimedia.org to appeal), but again: I am looking at your UpWork account right now, so you're going to need one heck of a good explanation if you're going to be unblocked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeneralNotability (talkcontribs) 17:45, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Refuweegee moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Refuweegee, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. The Arbitration Committee has resolved to remove the part of your block that is designated as a CU block. This means that you will need to further appeal to the community for the socking and undisclosed paid editing with an appeal on your talk page, where an administrator will be able to review it and potentially take further action. See Wikipedia:Guide to appealing blocks for further details. Izno (talk) 22:10, 27 January 2023 (UTC) [reply]

This user is asking that her block be reviewed:

AmirahBreen (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

The Arbitration Committe has advised me to appeal to the community for the socking and undisclosed paid editing with an appeal on my talk page, where an administrator will be able to review it and potentially take further action.
1. The issue my account AmirahBreen I was initially blocked for was paid editing. I have listed all the paid editing below.
After being blocked for paid editing I found that much of my unpaid work (the vast majority of work I had done on Wikipedia was unpaid) was being deleted. I found this upsetting and attempted to edit using an old account JFBreen. The old account was blocked as a sockpuppet. Although I had never intended to engage in sock puppetry from the start, I set up AmirahBreen before I was ever aware of the rules on sock puppetry, and both accounts were own name.
After both these accounts were blocked I began to set up sock puppet accounts. All of which were blocked almost immediately. The reason the last sockpuppet account I attempted to use was identified was due to the fact I have always used the same Amazon Fire computer (as it says on the Sockpuppet Investigation same user agents were used). I did not consider it worth the purchase of a new computer to defend work I had never been paid for anyway and even the small amount of paid work I had done was hardly enough to pay for a new laptop, so at this point I did not persist further in attempting to create sockpuppet accounts. Although the edits I made through the sockpuppet accounts were good faith in principal I realise now that it was disruptive to be creating accounts to edit while my main account was blocked and have long since stopped doing this.

I'm pretty impressed with this request. GeneralNotability, what are your thoughts? SQLQuery Me! 22:55, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
SQL, since I was involved in the arbcom side of this, I think it's better if I don't opine. You are free to act on this as you think appropriate. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:07, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, thanks for getting back to me. I'll wait for more opinions. SQLQuery Me! 00:51, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question. Regarding the Talk:Sharif_Sheikh_Ahmed/Archive_1#WP:COI? discussion, is it still your position that you had no WP:COI on that article? I'm not asking about WP:PAID here. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:26, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's also the issues brought up here: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1065#WP:NPOV, WP:OWN, and copyright violations at Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 11:59, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is still my position, and this issue has also no connection with the reasons I have been given for being blocked, which are paid editing and sock puppetry. This is why I did not mention them in my appeal. Amirah talk 12:12, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:18, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ScottishFinnishRadish, this was a content dispute and in no way was it connected to the issues of paid editing or sock puppetry, other than the fact that the fervour with which in my opinion you were trying to whitewash the article, led me to believe that there was probably some motive behind your actions such as possibly payment or COI, while I was trying to accurately reflect the tone of reliable independent press sources, had not at that time ever been paid for any work I had done on Wikipedia or ever deliberately engaged in sockpuppetry. I understand that two wrongs don't make a right, and whether or not my opinion is correct, does not give me valid grounds to do similar. This is not an accusation toward you, it is an honest statement about how your behaviour made me feel at the time.
As I have mentioned in the discussion you linked to on the admin noticeboard, this was a learning curve for me, as although I had been editing for a substantial length of time before I started work on the article, my edits had rarely if ever been challenged due to the fact I had been editing in a subject area which few editors were actively involved in at the time. Where improvements to my editing skills were due I made improvements, in areas such as sources I was quoting and avoiding the use of editorials, opinion pieces etc. as well as copyright violations, but the tone in which I was ordered to make these improvements by you was always accusatory from the start and in the of assumption of bad faith, which did not help with communications over the content dispute between us.
I don't know what you have learnt from this, but I believe I have learnt from it myself, and that my years of editing experience are now more valuable to Wikipedia than they were as a result. Amirah talk 15:27, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would also like to add that since I was banned from editing Wikipedia, there has been one alteration to the page on Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed which I would like to amend. This is that there was an internal link on the mention of the name Ikran Tahlil Farah to the page which is now called Disappearance of Ikran Tahlil Farah. This became a red link when the name of the page was changed (ie. 'Disappearance of' was added) and the red link was then deleted. When I read through the page in it's current state this is the only thing that jumps out at me as needing amendment. Amirah talk 16:31, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If unblocked, what kind of edits (if any) would you make, to what kind of articles/topics?Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 06:27, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry this explanation is rather lengthy, but before I make any edit I have to take into consideration if it is likely to bring about any lack of consensus, if other steps need to be taken first such as checking reliability of sources on Reliable Sources Noticeboard or talk page discussions. I currently have no fixed plans, but have some ideas on some pages concerning Somalia which are in need of updating. I think you will see by this how one thing leads to another and that I am planning possible future edits as I am writing.
If I'd stopped short at saying 'I don't have any extensive plans', and been unblocked at that, the reality may appear rather different, because Somalia is a subject on Wikipedia in which there are many gaps and also unfortunately on some pages there is unreliable or inaccurate information. I hope the following gives you some idea as to how I would proceed if unblocked, and whether I am unblocked or not, it may also give others who read it ideas of issues which are in need of updating. This is not a promise that I will make these edits, as working on Wikipedia is voluntary and must also fit in with a person's other commitments. I also realise from my previous experience on updating articles concerning Somalia, the necessity of taking breaks and time to view the greater picture.
Some edits may be quite simple such as I noticed on the 2022 Somali presidential election page that the Party column of the results table contains inaccurate information. In these elections Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was standing for UPD not PDP, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed was standing for HQ not ARS, both of these can be confirmed by looking at their bio pages, and also from UPD and ARS pages that neither of these parties were in existence at the time of 2022 election. An internal link could also be placed to Kaah.
I can't see any record on Wikipedia that a month ago Puntland announced an intention to cut ties with central government until the constitution is completed. I realise there are fairly few sources for this, I can't find any international sources, but I feel it can be sourced reliably enough and that it is an important issue which deserves mention. If I'm not sure about sources I'll check first on the Reliable Sources Noticeboard and also make sure that talk page communication is good. I will also discuss any issues like what page(s) is/are appropriate to mention this on. If it should be on the Government of Puntland page, Dani's bio, or if it should be on both, (ie. a link on Dani's bio to the issue which should be covered on the Government of Puntland page). Although it was created in 2014 and has been updated with changes of leadership Government of Puntland is still a start class article which is mostly about it's establishment and setup. I realise that adding information such as this would stand out on the page, as up to now there has been no information about on-going proceedings within the state government, but nevertheless imo may well be one of the most important announcements the state government has made to this point, particularly following Dani's bid for the national Presidency last year, which is mentioned in press articles on the subject. I do think it is probably an important enough issue to mention on the state government page, despite the lack of international press coverage.
I also believe that it may be relevant to other issues which are going on, for example, if you read yesterday's report in Reuters 'At least 24 killed in second day of fighting in Somaliland' and are unaware of the announcement to temporarily sever ties with central government', you may be missing vital background information, that Puntland currently sees itself as acting as an independent state. Although I can see a probable link to these events, and would also expect that others would, I would know from my editing experience not to explicitly state that on Wikipedia unless a link is also also mentioned in the press, but it does lead me to look deeper at what is happening in Las Anod, and I notice at the time of writing that the Las Anod article has also not been updated on the events in yesterday's Reuters article, although there is a recent update about talks with clan elders over protests about frequent assasinations, so I would expect that there are other editors also currently editing this page and I would take care to reach consensus with them on any edits I make.
The Reuters article mentions that the Somaliland government made accusations against Puntland, which Puntland has denied, it also describes Puntland as a semi-autonomous region of Somalia, but does not mention the recent announcement by Puntland to temporarily cut ties with central government. I know from past editing experience that there are guidelines against combining information from two separate sources in a way which may imply something which isn't explicitly stated in either article, so I would review these guidelines and perhaps consult with other editors on the talk page before making a decision as to whether that should be mentioned here.
The issue with Puntland also leads me to wonder how the constitution is progressing, so I would review the page Constituion of Somalia. I find the page a bit confusing at first sight. There are two main section headings, Previous constitutions and Federal Republic of Somalia. I would consider changing the second heading to Provisional consitution and mentioning at the start of the section the date it was adopted as it says in the lede. I also notice in the section that there are no references although there are main article links in the sub-headings and the information is better referenced in the main articles, so I would check these references and see if referencing could be improved in the article. I think I would take a step back from editing at this point while I research issues about the constitution.
Nothing has been said on Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's bio about his current term in office, other than the updates to the lede. His previous term was covered in some detail. I feel that this page should be flagged with an updates needed tag. Regarding the constitution I would try to find answers to some questions such as was it an election promise, has he given any public response to Dani on the subject, reasons (if any) for delays, has he delegated the task, etc. and consider if there are reliable sources which warrant updates to the bio page.
I also notice that The East African article 'Puntland jolts Somalia with 'independent' policy, says that Puntland's statement claims that 'both the Provisional Constitution of Somalia and the Constitution of Puntland allow Puntland to function independently', this appears to conflict with the Federal Government of Somalia page where it says under subheading Federal member states that they are 'constitutionally subject to the authority of the Federal Republic of Somalia'. The references given are a pdf file on Wayback 'Harmonized Draft Constitution Eng Tran' and 'Guidebook to the Somali Draft Provisional Constitution' also a pdf file on Wayback. I would consider if these sources are reliable and up-to-date including any amendments or if a better source is available in order to better understand what is said in The East African article and perhaps add a discussion on the talk page. I'm not currently sure if the FGS page needs updating to reflect this. Garow Online 'Puntland suspends co-operation with central govt amid fallout' 100123, says that Dani is invoking section 142 of the Provisional Constitution.
Please note: I am spelling Deni as 'Dani' above for consistency because that is how it is spelt on his Wikipedia bio page heading, however in every source I can find and also in the bio article itself it is spelt as 'Deni', so I would also consider that the spelling of the page title should be changed to Said Abdullahi Deni.
