nangparbat sock is back again

86.153.130.184 is a pro pakistani vandalizing articles. another user claimed he is a sock of a user called Nangparbat. please see [1] and [2]. help please. he is inserting pakistani argument everywhere n remove indian ones. he write administered near kashmir (india) n removes for pakistan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.111.31.145 (talkcontribs)

I'll look into it. Sounds like some more rangeblocks are in order. Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:07, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I nominated the article Crime in the United Arab Emirates for DYK, but did not receive the DYK message. What should I do? Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 01:13, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's already been used, so I'd say you can just give it to yourself. The template notices are just to let someone know that their suggestion was used; either they figured it was unnecessary in your case, or they just forgot (the more likely of the two). Congrats, in any event! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:19, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nangparbat

Hello Hersfold,

Just wanted to bring to your attention that Nangparbat is back again using various IPs as how he did before. This time however s/he's much more aggresive and it's difficult for us to constantly undo his changes. It's again the same thing, claiming articles are "pro-Indian bias" and "anti-Pakistani". I initially wanted to avoid seeking administrator intervention by talking to him, but this seemed in vain as he was still continuing his damaging edits rather than discussing them with me. To prove my point that he's being disprutive rather than constructive, here are some of the activities he indulges in.

  • Removal of cited content
    • as he did here. You can check the source and verify if what he's telling is true.
  • Making bold and nasty remarks
  • Page blanking
  • Makes edits in bad taste without using proper grammar
    • Look at this for instance. I'm sure you understand clearly what he's trying to imply.

To repeat myself, reverting again and again is a burden to Wikipedians such as myself and others. The user is not willing to communicate constructively to iron his dissatisfaction out. He just wants things done his way. I don't know how to classify his actiona other than vandalism. Hence, I see no other way than to enforce a range block as done before. The range block before created relative peace for two-odd weeks. Now it has started all over again. I'm not an advocate of this measure, but I see no other alternative. We have tried protecting pages in the past but this user tends to move on to other pages within the same scope. Day by day more damage is being done.

Some of the Ips involved (in this round, excluding the case in the beginning of August) are as listed below:

I'll keep updating

With this, I humbly seek your assistance in cracking down on this menace. Please keep me posted on the progress. I have placed this page in my watchlist. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks and have a great day. S3000 ☎ 10:16, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

are you prepared to talk yes or no if vandals like kashmir cloud are let of the hook just because hes indian and hersfold has a thing for india i will continue to revert kashmircloud totally biased edits you can rangeblock all you want unless kashmir cloud is on the loose i will carry on reverting his pro india edits (your probably going to revert this edit maybe you should talk with me instead look what happened in iraq you didnt talk just went to war now the world hates america and americans) 86.162.67.217 (talk) 11:19, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please go ahead and add any more active IPs to User:Hersfold/Vandal watch#Nangparbat, taking care to keep them in sorted order to make rangeblocks easier to determine and marking the new ones with (active). I'm going to go to ANI about this - I'm not certain about a rangeblock a second time around, as this is a very commonly used network in the UK, and he is bouncing around a bit as you can see. Hopefully we'll get an end to this soon, although any measure we do is likely to be temporary, as it was last time. Hersfold (t/a/c) 13:41, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll keep the User:Hersfold/Vandal watch#Nangparbat updated. Yes, it's fine if it's just temporary. We certainly can't clampdown a range of IPs indefinately. In fact the last time you rangeblocked, it was effective in the sense that the disruptive editing stopped. Only now (I guess the block recently expired) has it started again. Please keep me posted. Thanks again. S3000 ☎ 17:38, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The problem here is that we're dealing with a huge network. Most of these IP addresses should be stable, but Nangparbat has apparently found out how to force his IP to change sooner than it should. As a result, any IP address we block is going to be someone else within a few minutes, and any range we block is going to be filled with innocent users within a day or two. I know last time it seemed to work well enough, but we probably blocked off hundreds of other people who didn't bother to protest the block.
What we can do is contact the ISP through an abuse report and make them aware of the situation. With any luck, they'll be able to do something on their end to stop this. Until then, we're more or less limited to blocking each IP for a short time as they come up. It's annoying and not as effective, I know, but we also have to consider what we're doing to other users looking to join. Sorry. Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:39, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. It's pointless blocking hundreds of innocent users due to the misconduct by one rotten apple. In the mean time, please go ahead and make an abuse report as this user doesn't seem like he's gonna stop his nonsense anytime soon. We shall keep our fingers crossed that the report may help straighten this issue. In the mean time I'll keep watch of his edits and zap them at point. If it persists for long, I will contact you seeking assistance to semi-protect certain articles which are hot on his inventory. Please keep me updated. Thanks. S3000 ☎ 17:26, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's also a possibility. Again, semi-protection can't be permanent in this case, especially on talk pages, but it should help deter him if he gets particularly troublesome. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:31, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Report has been filed at Wikipedia:Abuse reports/81.15x.x.x and 86.1x.x.x ranges. Hopefully it will get dealt with soon, although it technically doesn't meet their criteria. I'm hoping whoever looks at this will understand that 92 IP addresses are a bit excessive for one person to be using. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:58, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had a conversation with this guy (please see my talk page) and I addressed his issues. He claims that he will not continue his disruptive edits, in fact he said he will not edit anymore! I'm not too sure how sincere he is, only time will tell. Hence, do you think we should proceed with this (taking into account the past damage he's done) or keep it on hold for the time being? Thanks. S3000 ☎ 19:26, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
<- Keep an eye on him for a while, I guess, and if he doesn't cause any more trouble I'll just delete the abuse report. We can always get it restored if it's needed again. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:16, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Those "hot articles" are on my watchlist and I'll get back to you should there be further trouble. Please keep User:Hersfold/Vandal watch#Nangparbat open (or saved in archive) as has may show up again in future. Thanks for your assistance. Have a good day. S3000 ☎ 08:37, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you were confused by the {{unblock}} template on my user talk page. The reason it didn't make sense was because it was placed by User:56.0.143.23 who was vandalizing apparently confused as to its purpose. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 23:16, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Status help

Clearly I am missing something in the directions you've given for installing your status template. If you get a chance could you help a new user out and give me the remedial directions? (I'm sure it's something silly I'm missing!) Thanks! clarityat3am (talk) 03:56, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like everything should be working out - make sure you're using the Monobook skin in your preferences (that's the default one, so you'll know if you've changed it), and that you've bypassed your cache recently to force your browser to use the new script. It looks like it's working for me (I just set you to "offline"), and I don't see anything that would be causing problems on your end. Let me know if you keep having trouble with it. Motto of the day

Hey there, long time no see. I believe the last time I met you was when I was looking for an adopter, and therefore I asked you. Well, I'm past I've graduated my adoption, about two months ago, and its nice to see you again. :-) Anyway, I received your message (and noticed you were adding this to many user's talk pages, so I decided to comment here rather than my talk page, since I highly doubt you would be watching over 200 user pages), and would be happy to help with Motto of the Day. I have been watching the page for about 5 months, but never really commented recently, so I could of course start again. Though, I've never seen the process of closing nominations, and would like to get involved in this area. I'm sure my experience with closing WP:AfDs would help me decide consensus while closing nominations. Now, since I've basically been inactive for a while here, may I have links to the pages involved in MOTD? Thanks! -- RyRy (talk) 03:15, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's rather similar to AfDs, except you are basically counting votes since it's all "I like it" kinda stuff, and consensus recently has been two people, one of whom was me. As I said in the message, there's details on the nominations page, but it's not too big a deal. Anyway, it's all at WP:MOTD. Thanks for helping out. Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:48, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thanks for the info! -- RyRy (talk) 03:53, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message. I completely agree with you and understand your position - I led the MOTD revival project a long while ago, which brought it to the attention of many. It was completely dead when I found it, I revived it, redid the main pages, sorted the template out (when we only had one) and got more people involved. Since then it has stagnated again, partly because I lost some interest and partly because a lot of mottoes were repeats or people were running out of things to say. I'll see what I can do about suggestions and voting on current ones, and also about bringing the MOTD project to the attention of the wider Wiki. —Vanderdeckenξφ 14:27, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re: motto of the day

Thanks for inquring about the motto of the day. I did notice that sometimes mottos would repeat every week or so. I think what your doing is a good cause, and could help Wikipedia immensely.

I do have a suggestion about a motto. I want to post this on the nominations page, since I don't have the full idea. Maybe somthing like, "Use the force, Luke", from Star Wars. The force being maybe blocking against vandals or using Twinkle. I don't know who Luke would be though.

Again, this is just a suggestion I'm just throwing out there. Please reply and give me your honest opinion. Thanks, and happy editing! --♥Soccer5525♥Talk To Me! 20:39, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You could try something like "Use the Force, Luke", or something similar. If you suggest it and mention you're not sure how to finish it up, people will probably suggest some other links to use. Thanks for the help! Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:35, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Motto of the Day

Hey Hersfold, can you explain the process on how to close MOTD nominations? I'd like to offer help in closing them, but I'd like tips on how to. iMatthew (talk) 19:47, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are detailed instructions at the nominations page, but basically you're counting votes. It's supposed to be based on consensus, but since most of the comments are "I like it" it boils down to "Are there enough people supporting this?". If so, just add :{{Approved}} ~~~~ at the end of the discussion and move it to the bottom of the nominations page (the Decisions section). Someone will come along later and schedule it. If there's not enough support to accept it, you can either {{subst:relist}} it or mark it with {{Thrown out}}. Relists go back to the top of "In Review" and rejects go to the decisions section. It's all pretty simple, as closings go. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:38, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HI HELP

please save POK article from deletion

Pakistan occupied Kashmir article has been posted for deletion..i have made the following appeal there:

  • do not delete : PLEASE allow editing to take place in this article so that it gets balanced; disabling editing and then crying unbalanced is hypocrisy!!!..As we all know we didn't delete european union article just because there was an "england" article or "france" article or "germany" article (which are part of EU nevertheless) ... Similarly we did not destroy soviet union article just because it is divided into 15 parts..Further it is very very clear that POK is not the same as "azad k ONLY" or "northern areas ONLY" as pok also includes trans karakoram tract, gilgit and baltistan (from 1947 till now)...pok term is used by most if not all non pakistan media.so ip and soman contention invalid.. i think it is not "fork" since contents are not identical, verifiable, has reliable sources and differs from the other articles like "trans-Karakoram tract" or "Northern Areas" (at the maximum, there is a passing reference in the summary(if this is considered fork) style with redirect links to sub regions). So, i am opposing this high handed move based on ignorance..rather i suggest that those who suggest it as non neutral contribute towards making this neutral, if it is not already neutral..pahari sahib's contention of inflammatory not substantiated both in talk page of pok or otherwise..so DO NOT DELETEKashmircloud (talk) 11:06, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

if you can improve this article or if you believe that the article can be improved by removing the edit ban(say, exampple: semiprotect) and if you also concur that pok not equal to ajk, please help in saving this article from deleters with nationalistic (pakistani)/ religious(islamist?) motives for POK article removal(example: User:paharisahib is pakistani)..please save the POKarticle... I know full well you're on BT Internet, because you keep coming back. You may not be aware, but an attempt is being made to contact your Internet Service Provider. If you continue to evade your blocks to attack users and troll discussions, they will hear about it. You've been blocked again - please take this as a break from the project and come back after you've had some time to calm down and can discuss matters in a civil manner. Hersfold (t/a/c) 16:01, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So you let KashmirCloud of the hook the guy who created 5 different accounts for sending out his POV messages this decision will not go down well with fairness when administraters here from me i beleive you are playing favourites with indian editors and go on call BT freind ill be waiting to present my evidence against your exclusive picking on me have a nice day 86.158.238.188 (talk) 10:02, 8 September 2008 (UTC) However if a admin does look at this he will soon realise that its a dynamic ip which i have no control over what so ever so the sock puppet case will be decline my freind i suggest you stand in a neutral position in this case which i shall being soon and stop siding with kashmir cloud cheers 86.158.238.188 (talk) 10:16, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Hersfold, I've changed the sisterproject temp back to the old version, but only for now. It doesn't seem right to make use of the new logo until local implementation on Meta itself has been initialised. Just wanted to let you know. Cheers, —Anonymous DissidentTalk 13:22, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It checked their site and it looked like their site logo was the new one. Oh well, you're more active there than I am. Thanks. Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:29, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

erasing votes for Pakistan occupied Kashmir

Hi, on this page you reached the conclusion that the three accounts appertain to one user and blocked two of them, which is obviously in concordance with Wikipedia policies. Notwithstanding, you have erased all three votes for the preservation of the article - why had not you spared the vote of the originate person (I know, he is guilty for puppeting, but I am asking you, because he is an editor willing to vote, he is undoubtedly not entitled for three votes, but why not for one?) ? Bogorm (talk) 16:55, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A couple reasons - firstly, I'm not entirely convinced he wasn't a sockpuppet himself. Next, his comment was almost directly copied from another !vote, and so wouldn't have counted for much in the closing anyway. Thirdly, we generally don't count the opinions of blocked users, regardless of the reason they were blocked, as we're generally looking for opinions of editors in good standing (which does not exclude IP editors, since they switch around). Finally, I've just about had it with the disruption on that AfD and related articles, and I want to make it clear it's not going to be tolerated any further. How I got dragged into this mess I'm still not sure, but I'm tired of it and want it to stop. If striking votes is a way to get that point across, they're going to get struck. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:31, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You may also wanna strike Nangparbat's IP vote. I saw it striked earlier but now it appears not to be. Perhaps he's undone it. Too lazy to check the history as it's moving too fast. S3000 ☎ 17:35, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll check later on, there's no huge rush. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:36, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problems. I suggest semi-protecting the article to stop the mess -once and for all. S3000 ☎ 17:37, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

You might be interested in the discussion here. Exploding Boy (talk) 18:23, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I'm not seeing why. Have I been involved with either of these editors before, or are you just looking for some help sorting things out? Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:00, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I just went through the history and thought you'd commented on the situation previously. Perhaps I got my wires crossed. Exploding Boy (talk) 19:04, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem - after checking further, I do remember seeing the original discussion on the signature, but I didn't comment or anything. Looks like you're handing it quite well, so I'll not comment to avoid edit conflicting anyone. Do let me know if you need a hand, though. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:06, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Exploding Boy (talk) 19:07, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comparison of school districts in New Jersey

I truly question whether this sort of list article has a place in Wikipedia. It seems to be more or less listcruft to me. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:19, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't expected him to create a whole new page, but now that he has, I'm going to let him finish and then the content can probably be merged into List of school districts in New Jersey. What he's doing can be useful, and should help the main list out. Having things move or get deleted now is just going to make things a bit difficult. He's a new user, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt and see how things turn out. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:23, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A merger would be appropriate in principle, or even replacing the existing list article with this, but that's going to be one hefty article. Good luck. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:26, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HI (sorry 'bout the spammy note),

- DYK updates have been a bit slow and there's a bit of a shortage of admins actively involved. We are asking folks who listed themselves on Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins to update details on this page - User:Olaf Davis/DYKadmins, so we can grade everyone's involvement (and who, knows, someone may want to get involved more :) ).Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:24, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note, I've added myself to the list. I'll try to pop in occasionally to see if it needs updating. Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:26, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Motto of the Day further help

Hi Hersfold, I was just wondering if we're allowed to move In Review quotes to the decisions section? If it's got obvious support (such as It's the little things you do now, that make the difference later.) and mark it approved pending date selection it would just save you a job! Thanks, •xytram•tkcsgy 15:27, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Of course! Any nomination more than 14 days old or one that's obviously snowballing can be closed by any editor. You can go ahead and schedule any motto you approve on the next available day, or list it at the approved list for scheduling later on. Thanks for the help! Hersfold (t/a/c) 04:00, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whilst I have writers block in terms of articles I'm really up for helping out with the motd and have a suggestion. At the moment the approved section is empty yet the 'decisions' in nominations is just tagged on the bottom. Would it be worth changing 'approved' to 'decisions' and transcluding that onto the nominations page?
Anyone casual user looking at approved won't see anything! Just an idea... :) •xytram•tkcsgy 10:50, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have been thinking of doing away with the approved page entirely; right now it doesn't seem to serve much purpose, especially since it involves just as much effort to list a motto there as it does to actually schedule it. I'll suggest it on the talk page and see what people think. Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:51, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi hf. Hope all is well. I've been playing around in my sandbox and come up with somethings that may be useful to MOTD. I used the WP:AFC templates for assistance on this. See User:Xytram/motd •xytram•tkcsgy 12:27, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Those look pretty good - we'd probably need to get some input on those before implementing them, however. Nice work! Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:44, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

you might want to reconsider

...the 24-hr block, as 66.243.209.102 (talk · contribs) appears to be another one of Grawp's pathetic cries for attention. Might we extend this loser to indef, per this edit? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 05:10, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It wouldn't do the slightest bit of good, even if we did block IP's indefinitely. He hops IP addresses so fast it's hard for us to keep up with him at some times. Within a couple hours, someone else will be on that IP address wondering why they can't edit. Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:13, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How the hell does this ass-clown do that? Actually, never mind - no sense telling peeping vandals how to do that. Let me know via email, if you know. How to put the kibosh on grawp, short of hiring a merc to do something hideous to the stalking vandal? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 05:15, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can tell you here anyway, since I don't really know or care to for just that reason. But yes, an ass-clown he is, and since we're making next to no headway with whoever gives him internet access, we've got no immediate way of getting him to stop. However, there are some new tools on the way that should get the software to stop him before he can do any nastiness. Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:20, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You mean, you cannot, right? :) - Arcayne (cast a spell) 05:23, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever. :P Hersfold (t/a/c) 05:23, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

kasamh se plot

hi The kasamh se article is locked from editing. please unlock it, as i am trying to edit it. I am a good faith editor.

Honeygirl111 (talk) 23:10, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly are you trying to do? The article has been protected because several anonymous editors keep re-adding the gigantic plot section I removed according to policy. The talk page would seem to indicate you're going to do the same. Articles can have a plot section, but it shouldn't be more than two or three paragraphs long, since Wikipedia isn't TV Guide or anything even remotely similar. If you can break the plot section down to something of that length, I'll be happy to help you add it in, but I'll not permit the re-adding of the huge one that was in that article a couple days ago. Does that work for you? Hersfold (t/a/c) 23:24, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kshatriya page

Hi, The Kshatriya page is semi-protected. I have tried to contact the admin several times, but there has been no response to open the semi-protection. Can you please open the page for edits?

Thanks Hersfold! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.230.38.115 (talkcontribs)

I've unprotected the page mainly because no expiry date was set and it's been about a week now. However, please keep an eye on the edit warring, and if you get reverted, stop editing and discuss things on the talk page, and wait to edit the article until there's a consensus. If problems continue, the page may be reprotected. Thanks. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:14, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
