The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Wikipedia article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

    Advice to requesters

    All requests:

    • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
      • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
    • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
    • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

    SVG requests:

    • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
    • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

Article(s): Flag of Baton Rouge, Louisiana

    Request:

Create an SVG file of the 1968 adopted flag of Baton Rouge:

The background of the flag is green, symbolizing the growth, vitality and fertility of the land. The center emblem is a shield of white on which the colors red, blue and yellow are used. On the upper part of the shield is a crown in remembrance of the rule of Spain, France and England. The castille and lion of Spain are depicted as are fleurs de lis and a representation of the Red Stick for which Baton Rouge was named. A banner below the shield states: Founded 1721; Capital City of the Mississippi; Incorporated 1917.

graph(s) to replace table of Search Warrants authorized by the secret FISA Court by year (apropos NSA, Edward Snowden, PRISM, etc.)

    Article(s): United_States_Foreign_Intelligence_Surveillance_Court#FISA_warrants

Request: A graph (perhaps a bar chart, or several) to replace the current table (which is missing individual entries for 1980-1999) of Search Warrants authorized by the secret FISA Court by year. We have all the data, e.g. at the cited sources: https://epic.org/privacy/wiretap/stats/fisa_stats.html https://www.fas.org/irp/agency/doj/fisa/index.html#rept The 3 remaining footnotes (c,d,e, after and b are deleted) should refer to points on the graph representing the datum in the table they annotate. -- Elvey (talk) 16:41, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Graphist opinion(s):

Did you know that you can produce simple wiki bar charts yourself, using a new lua module, and keep the data on-wiki for easy updating?
See Module:Chart#Drawing Bar charts: "bar chart" and an example of one being developed at User:Begoon/sandbox/casualties (see the linked templates for how it's done.)
You can't get all the pretty graphical effects you can in an svg, but it's quite flexible, has nice tooltips etc, quite good enough for uses like this, and has the advantage of being "dynamic" rather than "static", in that once the templates are created it's easy to update data without needing to generate a new graphic each time, or needing access to svg source code, etc... Player for animated GIFs

Quicksort explanation. How to stop and take a detailed look *hmmm*
RING finger domain illustration. How to stop and step forward or backward...

Hello, (Pardon me, if this the wrong place to ask, but I didn't found something to this topic and where to put) Animated GIFs are widely used in all Wikipedias (e.g. 7700 animated gifs alone on commons, for technical schemes, medical phenomenas etc (e.g. Walschaerts_valve_gear). A big usability problem with this form of videos, neither Mediawiki nor the browsers themself offering control possiblities for the reader (unlike other video formats). Missing capabilities are to pause and unpause, to step forward and backward per frame, playing backwards etc. This problem was described by a wikipedia user some time ago and he created also a solution. He created a platform neutral, Javascript based GIF Player, JSGIF (explanation as Bookmarklet in the link), which is pretty useful. Also, the code is available under a MIT license GIThub and therefore adapt or useable. Another alternative would be if GIF would accepted as video format by HTML5 video tag, but as far was I'm aware of, no browser is at the moment supporting this. So, what do you think can be this JS code used as prototyp for improving the situation? Or is there another good solution possiblity ? cheers Shaddim (talk) 15:37, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing watermarks from an 1800-1801 CE illustration of a South Indian caste?

    Image in question: http://imagesonline.bl.uk/?service=asset&action=show_zoom_window_popup&language=en&asset=16515&location=grid&asset_list=16515&basket_item_id=undefined

    Article(s): Vanniyar

    Request:

Greetings, the article Vanniyar (a South Indian caste) could use more imagery, and I've found an 1800-1801 CE image on a commercial site, but the image is defaced with a watermark. In fairness, sure, an individual can add whatever they want to out-of-copyright images, but can we not also legally remove those additions to get back to the original non-copyright image? MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:18, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Graphist opinion(s):

I believe that while the original illustration may be non-copyright, the photo of the illustration taken by the British Library is a copyrighted image and as such not usable here. However if someone went to the British Library (or wherever the original illustration is) and took a photo and uploaded it with a free license, that would be OK. I'm fairly certain of this, but you may wish to ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, editors there will be able to give a definitive answer. -Wine Guy~Talk 23:48, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone make a PNG logo out of this image: http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/military_photos/axis-militaria/163980d1292779991t-rare-swedish-nsap-items-bap.jpg , to be used for the article Swedish National Socialist Farmers' and Workers' Party? -- Soman (talk) 04:57, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It would also be great if a PNG logo could be worked out for the Swedish National Socialist Party, see the pin on the left at http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/military_photos/axis-militaria/374631d1343096872t-sweden-snsp-party-pins-swede1.jpg and http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/military_photos/axis-militaria/374633d1343096956t-sweden-snsp-party-pins-swede3.jpg . Sea Harrier fighter jet - Simple engine diagram

    Request:

I'm not sure whether to post this here, but making a diagram based on the below two images will be very informative for the articles concerned. Like shown in the images, a simple diagram showing the inside layout of the engine and the nozzles would tremendously help in the understanding of this VTOL jet plane. -Ugog Nizdast (talk) 16:56, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Re-activating archived request.Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 15:40, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Recently, the Ascension Island territory has adopted a new coat of arms and started flying a new flag based on those arms. Attempts to add this image to Commons have usually resulted in copyright violations because they simply take the image supplied by the Ascension Island government at http://www.ascension-island.gov.ac/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Ascension-Island-Flag.jpg. We have non-free images on this wiki, but they are also derived from the copyrighted source. We need a skilled artist to be able to create a vector version of the new coat of arms based on its heraldic description rather than simply deriving a new image file from the government's source artwork. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:12, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Turn Jvuo1942 en.png into SVG

    details of moved request

    Article(s): es:Chetniks

    Request:

I would be grateful if someone can come up with an SVG version of the map above. The same base map is being used in a few WWI maps and once the basic map is available I think I could turn a few of them into SVG too (and make translations for the Spanish wikipedia, my main goal). I could create the new SVG version myself but I am afraid I do not have the time just now so any help is really welcome. Thank you!-- Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 19:25, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rowanwindwhistler, I moved this request to the map workshop (link above...), because I think you'll get better help there with this one. Begoontalk 02:18, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, many thanks and sorry if I placed my request in the wrong site...--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 09:38, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not the wrong place, I just think you'll probably get better help there, especially since you talk about a series of maps with a common "base" map - that's where they have lots of experience.
I did notice this discussion: Talk:Chetniks#Chetnik_liberated_areas_map. I don't know if you saw it, or if you think it's important, but I noticed they talked about changes to captions on the map. Maybe worth looking into - but I don't know enough about it other than to point it out. Begoontalk 11:03, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see, good to know. I was not aware of that discussion but I should have no problem changing the legend once we have an SVG version (I tend to filter all propaganda out everywhere anyhow). The main problem is getting the version, which may be quite a lot of work (it would be for me and my point-and-click way of turning rater to SVG at least...). Thanks a lot for your help!--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 13:21, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Illustrations of circles packed into a circle

Article(s): Circle packing in a circle

    Request:

Please create diagrams for the cases that do not have a diagram yet. The images should use the same style as those already in the article (i.e. big grey circle with smaller black circles). The diagrams can be modeled after the illustrations at http://www2.stetson.edu/~efriedma/cirincir/. This should be a relatively easy request and I could probably do it myself, if I had a suitable program. So if you don't want to take this request, but know a good program suitable for this purpose that is freely available on the internet for download, just let me know. (Btw., since I am on Windows, I do have Paint, but I find that to be a pain to work with because it doesn't allow you to create separate objects and doesn't support working with different layers). -- Toshio Yamaguchi 08:15, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
