Add Amborella  5

A plant species important for studying the evolution of flowering plants. From the article: "Amborella is of great interest to plant systematists because molecular phylogenetic analyses consistently place it at or near the base of the flowering plant lineage. That is, the Amborellaceae represent a line of flowering plants that diverged very early on (more than 130 million years ago) from all the other extant species of flowering plants" and "Since Amborella is apparently basal among the flowering plants, the features of early flowering plants can be inferred by comparing derived traits shared by the main angiosperm lineage but not present in Amborella." Because of its importance in plant evolution, its genome (the entirety of its DNA) have been sequenced. From Pillon 2008, cited in the article: "The disappearance of Amborella trichopoda would imply the disappearance of a genus, a family and an entire order, as well as the only witness to at least 140 million years of evolutionary history." I nominated this because User: Marchantiophyta mentioned it in here and I decided to see if I can explain its vitality.

Knives considerations: Add 2/Remove 2

Technology is currently under quota at 3180/3200 although many medical technology subjects seem to have several imminent additions. Nonetheless, I would like to consider the knives subjects. Above at the scalpel nomination this subject came up with User:Piotrus. We have 11 Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Level/5/Technology#Knives_(11_articles) at level 5, including Knife  3, Dagger  4 and Bayonet  4 at higher levels. Butterfly knife (28 interwikis) and Utility knife (19) both have more interwikis than most of the other level 5 inclusions: Switchblade  5 (16), Bowie knife  5 (23), Fighting knife (4), Hunting knife  5 (13), Pocketknife  5 (38), Swiss Army knife  5 (38), Throwing knife  5 (18), Assisted-opening knife (0)

Add Butterfly knife

The butterfly knife is an important martial arts implement and subject of legal controversy. It is probably both an example of a pocketknife and a fighting knife.

The entire set of RNA transcript in an organism. We list several omics topics: Genomics  5, Genome  5, Proteomics  5, Proteome  5, Epigenomics  5, Epigenome  5, Metagenomics  5, and Pharmacogenomics  5. Transcriptomics redirects to Transcriptomics techniques, and the Transcriptome article covers the techniques, so it should be sufficient. These are the Google Scholar hits:

  • Genomics 5,530,000
  • Genome 4,530,000
  • Transcriptome 1,430,000
  • Transcriptomics 299,000
  • Proteome 972,000
  • Proteomics 1,850,000
  • Epigenome 145,000
  • Epigenomics 118,000
  • Metagenome 103,000
  • Metagenomics 235,000
  • Pharmacogenomics 324,000

Based on the Google Scholar hits, transcriptomics is one of the more important omics fields, and Transcriptome can represent that in the VA list. Hanif Al Husaini (talk) 05:00, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Swap: Remove Tencent QQ  5, add WeChat Pay

Tencent QQ as an instant messaging service has largely been superseded by WeChat  5 among offerings from Tencent  5. Remove Bubble sort, possible swap with merge sort or Timsort

Bubble sort is a toy sorting algorithm that is exclusively used to motivate sorting algorithms in computer science courses. It is never used for anything in the real world. I think we should definitely remove it but since we are still slightly under quota in this section, we can also swap in merge sort which is another sorting-optimal O(nlogn) algorithm that is frequently used in external sorting on big data systems or timsort which is a variant of merge sort that is optimized to perform better on real-world data and is the default sorting algorithm used by Python and Java. • I won't oppose cutting bubble-sort (it's not used often), but I do think it's still useful as a theoretical concept. Both educationally and as a sort-of base-case algorithm that suggests other ones as optimizations.
Would definitely support adding back merge-sort though and also bucket-sort. We're over quota, but I know some other sections can be trimmed aggressively (I know because I did the bikeshedding). Maybe not right now, but I also feel like the entire Math quota eventually belongs more around 1500 slots. Zar2gar1 (talk) 17:31, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

  1. Oppose Chatoyancy, this does not seem to be a vital concept ("an optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones, woods, and carbon fiber"). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:09, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Not expecting to change your mind, but do you picture this as less vital than Lv5 in relation to something? We still have 30 slots in physics and can probably free up more like the big list of color spaces. which are arguably more computer standards anyways. I agree chatoyancy probably isn't a Lv4 article, but it's a distinct phenomenon. The fact we're still just adding magnification suggests to me that optical phenomena have been overlooked in general too; we're also missing iridescence, dichroism, and structural coloration. -- Zar2gar1 (talk) 21:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
@Zar2gar1 I'd support iridescence (41 interwikis vs 16 for chat...) before chatoyancy. And I'd expect we can find more vital physics concept to fill in the quota. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:15, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

The sibling topic to Suicide prevention  5, this is what you do to stop a suicide if you are past the point of prevention. It is a pretty important topic to Suicide  3, and appears a lot more than prevention in pop culture.

  1. A fairly common practice within the psychiatric field but not on the same level as for instance Kamikaze. The Blue Rider 19:46, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
@The Blue Rider: I don't see why not, I would argue it is just as important as Suicide prevention  5, especially since it has more of a presence in culture due to being the default way of stopping a suicide in fiction. Besides, Suicide  3 is VA3 and this is a notable enough subtopic to make the list. As you said, it is a fairly common practice. The comparison to Kamikaze also doesn't make much sense to me, since that was part of the Japanese military and not something happening to everyday people. QuicoleJR (talk) 20:18, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Kamikaze is a type of suicide thus the comparison. It's a common practice in psychiatric but it's relatively minor, in the sense that it just consists in a couple of questions on whether people have suicidal ideation, a time and date, access to lethal means and if that's so they probably will get admitted to the hospital, but that's the minority of people. Most of the work to mitigate suicide is done through prevention. The Blue Rider 16:34, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
