2014 Asian Beach Games
The Fourth Asian Beach Games are to be held in Phuket Island, Phuket Province, Thailand.[1] The games were originally scheduled for Boracay Island, Aklan, Philippines, but was affected by the OCA's hosting changes.
The games will fall on the same year of the 17th Asian Games. It will be the seventh time for Thailand to host an Asia level multi-sports event, after Bangkok held four Asian Games (1966, 1970, 1978 and 1998), one Asian Indoor Games (2005) and one Asian Martial Arts Games (2009). However, it will be the first time that the event would not be held in Bangkok.
History
The 4th Asian Beach Games is being pegged as the biggest ever in terms of the number of sports and participants that will revel in the pristine beaches of Phuket – coming into mind the sea, sun and sand – these attributes make Phuket a complete sporting destination that offers a lot more beyond its beauty. Visitors of Phuket will be welcomed with the warm and beautiful smiled of its people, and will definitely be smitten by the distinct charm of the island.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has laid the proper foundation in the organization of the Asian Beach Games. The Asian Beach Games were held First Asian Beach Games in the beautiful island of Bali, Indonesia, the Second Asian Beach Games at the majestic city of Muscat, Oman, and the Third Asian Beach Games edition at the charming coastline of Haiyang, China. The fourth edition of the Asian Beach Games will be held from November 14 to 23, 2014 at the stunning paradise of Phuket, Thailand.
Since 2008, the Asian Beach Games is becoming bigger and better, and it has been proven by the OCA and the host cities to be an outstanding success. The Asian Beach Games serves as a perfect venue for where sports-and-fun-loving people meet wherein the atmosphere bring affability to the environment and tourism.
With a strong initiative to support and promote the sports development model of the OCA; the Government of Thailand and the key official of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (Thailand), the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, have joined forces to get the hosting of the 4th Asian Beach Games and to make it a reality that will leave a long-lasting sporting legacy to the country and its people.
Emblem
The emblem of the 4th Asian Beach Games was driven by Phuket's very own beauty and by one of Phuket's most mesmerizing sceneries of Laem Promthep with such beauty that Phuket possesses, Phuket is also widely recognized as the Pearl of the Andaman Sea and the Southern of Thailand Paradise” where athletes, spectators and tourists could enjoy watching the ongoing game while at the same time allowing themselves to serenely sink into the spell-binding beauty of Phuket beaches and sceneries.
The two palm trees standing side by side represents the coming together of athletes and of all participants from different nations and races, to unite and to participate together in the 4th Asian Beach Games.
As for the middle, the Asian Beach Games is the center of this beautiful bonding between the races in which the athletes represents. The ocean waves tinted in the color of the Thai flag symbolizes the qualities in which Thailand possesses; the Thai flag swirling could be understood as a representation of the determination of the athletes in participating in the competition.
Mascot
“Sea turtle” is a symbol of endurance fertility, sustainability and growth. As Phuket is a home to many rare species of sea turtle, it is a chance to announce to the participants of the 4th Asian Beach Games and also to the public that Thailand pays great attention and an important role to the conservation of sea turtle.
As sea turtle are amphibious creatures, living both on land and in the sea, the 4th Asian Beach Games will have both beach sports and water sports which at the same time is an excellent symbol of the relationships of the different countries in Asia.
The name Sintu (Thai: สินธุ์), Sakorn (Thai: สาคร), Samut (Thai: สมุทร) shares the same meaning of water.
