On February 13, 2023, a mass shooting occurred at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Four people were reported dead, including the shooter from a self-inflicted gunshot. An additional five people were injured.[1]

Shootings

MSU Student Union, where the second shootings took place.

At around 8:18 p.m. EST, shots were fired in Berkey Hall according to Michigan State University Police and Public Safety.[2][3][4] MSU officials sent an alert tweet and text. Students were directed to, "run, hide, fight."[5] A shelter-in-place order was subsequently issued.[6] A second shooting was reported at the MSU Student Union.[7] Since the gunman was last sighted leaving the north side of the MSU Student Union, near the campus border, East Lansing residents living near campus were also asked to shelter in place.[8]

Police were active on the scene,[9] as well as other emergency services. Around 30 firetrucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles were present along Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum on Grand River Avenue in downtown East Lansing.[7]

At 9:26 p.m., police reported a second shooting at IM East, an on-campus gym.[10] Multiple people had been injured according to police.[11][2] At 9:34 p.m. EST, police announced that the area around IM East had been secured.[2]

Police response

The police initially responded to the call within minutes of the shooting taking place. There was a coordinated effort of local, state, and federal law enforcement with hundreds of officers assisting.[12]

Perpetrator

MSU Police and Public Safety released photographs of the gunman.[13] Police described him as "a Black male, short in stature, wearing red shoes and a jean jacket and a ball cap."[14] The gunman later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.[15] He was 43 years old.[13][16]

Victims

MSU Police and Public Safety reported that three people were killed.[17] Five other people were reported injured. A press conference by MSU Police and Public Safety at 11:00 pm reported five injuries including life-threatening injuries.[13][7]

Aftermath

Governor Gretchen Whitmer was briefed on the situation.[18] The ATF and FBI have announced that they are joining the investigation.[19]

The shelter-in-place order was rescinded following the death of the suspected shooter.[20][21]

All MSU activities have been canceled for 48 hours.[22]

Responses

Several Michigan congresswomen expressed condolences, as well as Governor Whitmer.[23] Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson described the incident as "unfathomable" and proceeded to call for greater action targeting gun violence.[24]
