Jonas Neubauer (April 19, 1981 – January 4, 2021) was an American Tetris player, 7-time champion at the Classic Tetris World Championship, and taproom manager.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Career
Neubauer began playing Tetris at the age of 6 or 7 on his uncle's Macintosh computer and started playing the NES version at age 9.[7] In November 2006 he provided the first known recording of a "maxout" game (999,999 points),[8] and in September 2008 he uploaded the first recording of a "maxout" achieved from a Level 19 start.[9]
Neubauer competed at the inaugural Classic Tetris World Championship in 2010, which he won by defeating Harry Hong in the final.[7] He won the next three tournaments before being defeated in the championship by Harry Hong in 2014. Between 2015 and 2017 Neubauer won three more World Championships, before being defeated in the 2018 final by 16-year-old Joseph Saelee.[6]
In June 2018, Neubauer set a (then) highest score world record of 1,245,200 points.[10]
Death
On January 4, 2021, Neubauer died at the age of 39 from a sudden medical emergency. His death was announced four days later on all of his social media pages.[11][12]
