Indian Institute of Information Technology, Dharwad (IIITDWD)[1] is an Institute of National Importance set up under a non-profit, Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India).[2] It is an academic and research institute partially funded by the Government of India,[3] the Government of Karnataka and industry partner KEONICS.[4]

The Institute offers BTech and PhD programs and has moved to its spacious permanent campus of 60 acres near Dharwad (in Dec 2020). As a not-for-profit institute of higher learning in the area of Information Technology (IT), the primary objective of IIIT Dharwad is to address the skill gap in high-end information technology and thereby enable India to retain its global leadership role in IT and allied areas. The Institute's Chairperson Smt. Sudha Murty, Board of Governors, and Senate constitute highly eminent leaders from administration, academia, and industry. They are instrumental in steering the institute in the right direction. IIIT Dharwad is a self-sustaining PPP Institute where all running expenses including salaries are met by the tuition and other fees paid by students.

Programs offered at IIIT Dharwad

There are 3 bachelor of technology programs offered at the institute of national importance. All three of the programs are designed to prepare the students for the current industry requirements. Being an autonomous institute, IIIT Dharwad's board of directors decide what has to be taught and they regularly update the courses as per the latest trends in the IT sector.

Computer Science and Engineering

The Program Educational Objectives of the BTech CSE program are to impart computational and algorithmic thinking in preparing the graduates technically and professionally for IT careers, entrepreneurship, higher studies and research.

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

There is no need to elaborate on the current trend in industry as well as academia: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. In a timely initiative, IIIT Dharwad is launching a brand new BTech Program in Data Science and AI in a new Department of Data Science and Intelligent Systems. The program prepares the student for exciting careers in this new area while also giving them a core foundation in Computer Science. It also equips the graduate with exposure to highly relevant application areas such as FinTech (Financial Technology) and Health Informatics.

Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Program Educational Objectives of the BTech ECE program are to impart electronics and communication system thinking in preparing the graduates technically and professionally for IT careers, entrepreneurship, higher studies and research.

The courses offered in these programs offer little or no insight to anything not related to the respective disciplines. With Maths and Physics required for IT in the first year and straight away jumping into coding and data structures and algorithms with both C and python, IIIT Dharwad does away with the prevailing culture in Indian colleges of teaching students stuff which are not related to their discipline for the first year. Electronics branch has an even more rigorous syllabi with subjects such as computer architecture from the very first year itself.

The institute gives it's students free rein in what they want to pursue in the vast fields of CSE and ECE from third year as the compulsory subjects are only till the second year and after that students can choose electives thus deciding what they want to pursue after knowing different topics in CSE and ECE for 2 years. Students are free to choose electives of whichever branch they wish.
