Spacestation Gaming (also referred to as simply Spacestation or SSG) is a multi-regional professional esports organization based out of Utah, USA founded & owned by social media influencer Shaun "Shonduras" McBride.[1][2] Since its founding, Spacestation Gaming has grown to include teams in 8 different leagues, and is active in esports content creation.[3] They are currently the defending Rainbow Six Siege world champions.[4]

History

Founding (2017)

Spacestation Gaming began with the sponsorship of a SMITE Pro League team in 2017, as McBride was a fan of the game. Shortly after entering the esports arena, SSG added PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Brawlhalla teams to bring diversity to their roster.

2018

In March 2018, Spacestation introduced their new Rainbow Six[5] and Rocket League[6] rosters. On April 27, SSG announced a strategic partnership with the NBA team the Utah Jazz,[7][8][9] designed to foster collaboration and growth within the two Utah-based organizations. That same month the organization also made their entry into the Battlerite competitive scene with players Averse, Bloom, and Proster joining their roster.[10] This team went on to win the Battlerite Pro League at Dreamhack.[11][12][13] In June, Spacestation Gaming announced its partnership with Uber Eats[14] - a first for Uber Eats in the eSports space. On September 12, Spacestation announced its new partnership with gaming chair provider Vertagear,[15][16] which included a custom SSG-branded chair to be sold by the company.

2019

Spacestation Gaming entered 2019 with the announcements of their joining the Paladins Premier League.[17] SSG also debuted its complete team of Rainbow Six players and creators, hoping to further integrate with the gaming community. Shortly after this announcement, the team went on to place top 10 at The Six Invitational, 2019.[18][19] The first SSG Apex Legends team was also announced and went on to compete at the X-Games.[20][21] In March, Spacestation Gaming announced their PUBG Mobile team,[22] and soon after announced an updated 2019 Rocket League roster. This Rocket League team went on to compete in the Rocket League Season 8 Worlds.[23] Sypical, a member of that team, was awarded Regular Season MVP for the 8th season of the RLCS.[24] In April, Spacestation announced a brand partnership with Champion, which was rolled out in Foot Locker stores across the United States.[25] This partnership meant being featured in a limited drop along with other e-sports organizations. This later grew into a full-fledged partnership, with additional Spacestation Gaming pieces released by the brand.[26] In August, SSG announced the addition of their first Brawl Stars roster,[27] with additional rosters in other regions like Brazil and Southeast Asia being announced in the following months. In October, SSG announced their partnership with mobile creators Powerbang and Clash With Ash.[28][29] This partnership would see the development of new business ventures and new relationships with the mobile community. On October 15, Spacestation officially exited the PUGB Esports scene, citing non-existent communication, and lack of feedback and support from the league.[30][31][32] Spacestation made their entry into Smash Bros Ultimate in November with the signing of LeoN, while the organization's first Trackmania racer, Matt, joined the organization in early December[33] as their racer in the new Trackmania Grand League. On December 15, the SSG Rainbow Six: Siege team took first place at the US National championship, earning the title of Team USA.[34] The Spacestation Rocket League team also competed in Madrid for the RLCS World Championship, taking 3rd place.

2020

The SSG Rainbow Six: Siege team continued their winning streak on February 17, winning the Six Invitational in Montreal, making them World Champions and taking home a total winnings of One million dollars.[35] This was the first time in over 3 years that a North American team won a major tournament in the league.[36] On March 2, SSG further cemented their departure from PUBG by officially releasing their mobile roster,[37][38] giving the same reasons for their exit as they had in October 2019. On May 16, after months of speculation,[39] Spacestation Gaming officially acquired the Clash Royale roster of Blast Off Gaming and revealed their player lineup, consisting of Samuel Bassotto, thegod_rf, ah craaaap, & LaPoKaTi, with Trainer Luis as team director.[40] Soon after this announcement, SSG revealed that they had also signed the World of Warcraft Arena team known formerly as "The Boys",[41] and that they would be competing in the Arena World Championship in the North American region. On April 4, Spacestation expanded into iRacing by announcing their partnership with NASCAR drivers Will Rodgers[42] and Chase Cabre, who would compete under the banner of Spacestation Gaming in events such as the annual NASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series, as well special invitational events occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic.[43] On August 24, Spacestation Gaming announced 4 of the 5 members of their VALORANT roster consisting of roca, insky, kaplan, and sSef to perform in future of Esports Riot Games has planned for it's game.[44] Spacestation Gaming's Rocket League team won the Fall North American Rocket League Major that ran through October 18th to October 25th. On November 23rd, AimLab and SSG announced their official partnership with their Rainbow 6, VALORANT, and future FPS Teams.[45]

Spacestation Gaming currently has active rosters in the following leagues: Rainbow Six: Siege, Rocket League, VALORANT, Smash Ultimate, Smite Pro League, Trackmania Grand League, iRacing, Clash Royale League and World of Warcraft.
