The station was founded in December 1985. WMPV was the only full-powered station in the Mobile–Pensacola viewing area to transmit an analog signal past February 17, 2009, according to a list from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).[citation needed]

The station's signal is multiplexed:

The station's digital signal remained on its pre-transition UHF channel 20.[2] Through the use of PSIP, digital television receivers display the station's virtual channel as its former UHF analog channel 21.
