Salma Lakhani will be the 19th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Her appointment as Lieutenant Governor was made by Governor General of Canada Julie Payette on the Constitutional advice of Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, effective upon the swearing of the oath of allegiance and oath of office. She will be the viceregal representative of Queen Elizabeth II of Canada in the Province of Alberta. Lakhani will be the first South Asian and the first person of the Muslim faith in Canadian history to hold a viceregal office.[2][3]
