Asaduddin Owaisi (born 13 May 1969) is an Indian politician,[3] who is the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.[4][5][6] He is a three-time Member of Parliament (MP),[7][8] representing the Hyderabad constituency in Lok Sabha,[9][10] the Lower House of the Indian Parliament.[11] He was honoured with Sansad Ratna Award for overall best performance in 15th Lok Sabha in 2014.[12][13]

Early life

Asaduddin Owaisi was born in Hyderabad, Telangana (former undivided Andhra Pradesh). His father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi was also a politician from Hyderabad,[14] for six consecutive terms. His mother's name is Najamunnisa. Owaisi studied at the Hyderabad Public School and the St. Mary's Junior College, Hyderabad. He graduated as a Bachelor of Arts from the Nizam College, Osmania University. He later went to London, where he studied L.L.B, and Barrister-at-Law (Lincolns Inn), England.[1] He is often referred as Naqeeb-e-Millat ("Leader of the community") by his supporters.[citation needed] He has two younger brothers, Akbaruddin Owaisi and Burhanuddin Owaisi.[15] Akbar is the member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly from the Chandrayangutta Assembly constituency, while Burhanuddin is the editor of the local Urdu daily "Etemad".[16]

Political career

Owaisi was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1994 and 1999. Subsequently, he was elected as an MP in 2004 and 2009. In response to the 2012 Assam violence, he warned that a lack of proper rehabilitation of the Muslim victims may lead to radicalization of the Muslim youth in India.[17] On 20 January 2013, he was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days in a 2005 case, and later shifted to Sangareddy jail. The case related to an MIM protest against the demolition of a mosque for a road-widening project in Medak district, on 16 April 2005 where Police booked him under various charges including criminal intimidation, rioting and promoting enmity between religious groups.[18] Owaisi was given the 2014 Sansad Ratna Award for his distinguished performance in the 15th Lok Sabha.[19][20]
Owaisi has been in controversies and news due to his politics primarily centered around Muslims.[21][22][23][24] In 2009, a case was registered against Owaisi on the order of Election Commission of India for chasing and beating up Syed Saleemuddin, a polling agent of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the Maghalpura area.[25][26] He and his brother had also been jailed for threatening the district collector of Medak district in 2005 for a road widening issue.[27] In March 2013, he was detained for organising rally without permission and carrying gun without license in Bidar,Karnataka.[28] Currently, Owaisi has four cases against him which were taken cognisance of by various courts of law between 2001 and 2011. While charges in three cases have not been framed, charges in a fourth case with IX JMSC in Naded, Maharashtra have been framed.[29]
In June 2014, Owaissi is said to have delivered hate speech against Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking Muslim community's support to his party.[30][31]

Owaisi is a big proponent of the abolition of Haj subsidy and utilizing the money for the education of Muslim women instead.[32]

Owaisi has become a prominent Muslim voice in the Parliament, across social media and on prime time television. His attempt throughout the year has been to portray himself as a liberal Muslim face.

Owaisi was listed 4th among The Famous Five who Rocked Indian Politics in 2015 [33]

On 7 February 2016, Owaisi surrendered before Hyderabad police for an assault a mob he lead carried out against Telangana Indian National Congress legislators.[34]

Political views

Demanding action against Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and Hafiz Saeed for killing innocents, Owaisi said the enemies of the country are enemies of Muslims. He said MIM has political differences with the Bharatiya Janata Party[35] but supports any action against the enemies of the country and has made this stand in Parliament of India.[36] Owaisi supports reservation for backward Muslims in government jobs and education institutes. He also maintains stand that he is against Hindutva ideology but not against Hindus.[37]

Personal life

Owaisi was married to Farheen Owaisi on 11 December 1996.[39][40] He has 5 daughters and 1 son.[29]
