Carnalbanagh (from Irish Carn Albanach 'cairn of the Scotsmen')[1] is a small village and townland (of 1,628 acres) in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, 13km east-north-east of Ballymena.[1] It is situated in the civil parish of Tickmacrevan and the historic barony of Glenarm Lower,[2] and is part of Mid and East Antrim district. It lies above Glenarm and is close to Mount Slemish.
Local services include Carnalbanagh Primary School,[3] Orange Hall and Presbyterian church. The local flute band is known as Carnalbanagh Flute Band.
The name 'Carnalbanagh' can also be spelt 'Cairnalbana' or 'Carnalbana.'
Presbyterian Church Controversy
The village was plagued by a rogue minister in the presbyterian church of that area. Stephen Dickinson, now stripped of his title of Reverend by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, has been subject to a number of criticisms, including mocking Pope John Paul II who suffered from parkinson's[4]. He has also been accused of various instances such as threats, which included violence, against partitioners who did not support him, as well as instances of phone-tapping and dangerous driving.
Upon being removed[5] from both the Glenarm and Cairnalbana congregations, he took up what many would call squatters rights in the Presbyterian Churches Glenarm manse. His claim to staying focused around his severely disabled son. This has led to a long uphill battle with the Presbyterian Church and the courts in order to move Dickinson out of the home, in order to make the vacant congregations available for the installation process to begin for a new minister.
The Church is currently being cared for by former moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, The Very Rev. Ivan McKay[6] and the convener overseeing is Rev. Dickey, who is rumoured to be in support of Stephen Dickinson.
