Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters (Japanese: デジモンユニバース アプリモンスターズ, Hepburn: Dejimon Yunibāsu Apuri Monsutāzu) is a Japanese multimedia project created by Toei Company and Namco Bandai Holdings, under the pseudonym Akiyoshi Hongo.[1] It is the eighth official installment of the Digimon franchise, but also considered as its own separate franchise from the original. An Anime adaptation of the franchise was animated by Toei Animation, directed by Gō Koga and written by Yōichi Katō (Mushibugyo, Yo-kai Watch) with character designs by Kenichi Ōnuki (Gundam Build Fighters). It began airing on all TXN stations in Japan on October 1, 2016,[2] replacing Time Travel Girl in its original time slot.

The series's theme revolve around technological singularity and artificial intelligence, a theme shared with the Appmons and the dangers of technology when used unwisely.

Plot

In the year 2045, technology has finally evolved to a degree of prosperity for the world. The World Wide Web has become a world for "Appli Monsters" (アプリモンスターズ, Apurimonsutāzu) or "Appmons", artificially intelligent beings born within mobile apps. The series focuses on Haru Shinkai, an everyday Junior High Student who wondered how will humans and Appmons would coexist better, but has problems on being timid and not being brave and motivated. Strangely enough one day, he discovers an Appmon lurking in his Smartphone, which reveals himself to be Gatchmon. He came to his world just to run away from a guy who is chasing him. But when the two found out that the supercomputer Leviathan goes berserk and creates viruses to turn all Appmons evil, its up for Haru and Gatchmon to restore the balance between their two worlds.

Main Characters

Haru Shinkai (新海 ハル, Shinkai Haru)
Voiced by: Yumi Uchiyama[2]
The main protagonist, he is 13 years old. Haru likes reading and always saw himself as a secondary character-like person, until he finds the AppliDrive and joins Gatchmon in his fight to stop Leviathan from taking over the world. His AppliDrive's color is red.
Gatchmon (ガッチモン, Gacchimon)
Voiced by: Kokoro Kikuchi[2]
Haru's Standard Grade, partner Appmon, derived from a search app. He likes to look cool and his search function allows him to learn many things, including other people's secrets and the weak point of his enemies.
DoGatchmon (ドガッチモン, Dogacchimon)
Gatchmon's Super Grade form, attained by fusing with Navimon, combining Gatchmon's search abilities with Navimon's navigation capacity to become stronger and more agile.
Eri Karan (花嵐 エリ, Karan Eri)
Voiced by: Umeka Shōji[3]
14 year old Eri is a member of the idol group "AppliYama 470". Cheerful and lively on the outside, she is actually very lonely. Her AppliDrive's color is blue.
Dokamon (ドカモン, Dokamon)
Voiced by: Motoko Kumai[3]
Eri's Standard Grade, partner robot-like Appmon, derived from an action game app. He has a strong and loyal attitude towards Eri, despite she has the habit to neglect him and boss him around.
Dosukomon (ドスコモン, Dosukomon)
Dokamon's Super Grade form, attained by fusing with Perorimon. It resembles a sumo wrestler.
Torajirou Asuka (飛鳥 虎次郎, Asuka Torajirō)
Voiced by: Shiho Kokido[4]
11 year old Torajirou is a free-spirited boy and a famous "Apptuber", who uploads videos to the site "Apptube" under the alias "Astra". He comes from a wealthy and traditional family and only spends 30 minutes per day making videos for Apptube, as he also intends to inherit his father's estate. His AppliDrive's color is yellow.
Musimon (ミュージモン, Myūjimon)
Voiced by: Nao Tamura[4]
Torajirou's Standard Grade, partner Rabbit-like Appmon, derived from a music app, who likes to go with the flow, just like his partner.
Mediamon (メディアモン, Mediamon)
Musimon's Super Grade form, attained by fusing with Recormon. It resembles a rap singer.
Rei Katsura (桂 レイ, Katsura Rei)
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga[4]
14 year old Rei is a mysterious hacker that pursues Haru with an unknown agenda and seems to know something about Leviathan. His AppliDrive's color is black.
Hackmon (ハックモン, Hakkumon)
Voiced by: Daisuke Sakaguchi[4]
Rei's Standard Grade, partner Appmon, with hacking abilities.

Haru's Classmates

Yūjin Ōzora (大空 勇仁, Ōzora Yūjin)
Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa[5]
13 year old Yūjin is Haru's childhood friend and a hot-blooded guy who is good with sports and is popular with the girls.
Ai Kashiki (樫木 亜衣, Kashiki Ai)
Voiced by: Mai Fuchigami[5]
13 year old Ai is Haru's classmate whom he has a crush on. She has a kind and gentle personality and is very popular with her peers.
Takeru Wato (和戸 尊, Wato Takeru)
Voiced by: Ryō Hirohashi[5]
13 year old Takeru, also known as Watson (ワトソン, Watoson), is Haru's classmate who likes smartphones, games, and other digital items.

Seven Codes

The "Seven Codes" are seven special Appmon that once reunited, are said to bestow their owner with the power to confront Leviathan.

Mailmon (メールモン, Mērumon)
Voiced by: Kōta Nemoto
Code no.1, he is an e-mail Appmon forcefully captured by Rei.
Roleplaymon (ロープレモン, Rōpuremon)
Voiced by: Takahiro Mizushima
Code no.2, he is a role-playing game Appmon captured by Haru after he calms him down.
Gomimon (ゴミモン, Gomimon)
Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato
Code no.3, he is a trash bin Appmon defeated and captured by Eri who entrusts it to Haru.

Antagonists

Leviathan (リヴァイアサン, Rivaiasan)
The main antagonist of the series. An artificial intelligence hidden in the dark web spreading a virus known as the "L virus" that infects Appmons, turning them rogue. Gatchmon tends to panic just upon mentioning its name, a habit he is trying to shake off with time.
Cameramon (キャメラモン, Kyameramon)
Voiced by: Kōsuke Okano
An agent serving Leviathan, he is a Standard Grade camera Appmon capable of see through any working camera to keep track of his enemies.
Scopemon (スコープモン, Sukōpumon)
Cameramon's Super Grade form, attained by fusing with Shotmon, and capable to snipe enemies from anywhere, even without a clear view with assistance from Cameramon's surveillance power. After being defeated by DoGatchmon, his Appmon chip is stolen by Mienumon.
Mienumon (ミエーヌモン, Miēnumon)
Voiced by: Shiori Izawa
A stealth Super Grade Appmon, capable of becoming invisible, and also working for Leviathan.

Media

Anime

The anime adaptation of the series began airing on all TXN stations in Japan on October 1, 2016, replacing Time Travel Girl on its original timeslot. The series's opening theme is titled "DiVE" by Amatsuki while the ending theme is titled "Aoi Honoo Syndrome" (青い炎シンドローム, Aoi honō shindorōmu, "Blue Flame Syndrome") by Riho Iida.

Manga

Two manga adaptations were released by Shueisha in November 2016. The first one was illustrated by Naoki Akamine and is serialized in V-Jump. The Second manga, titled Digimon Universe Appli Monsters: Appmon Gakuen (Japanese: デジモンユニバース アプリモンスターズ アプモン学園, Hepburn: Dejimon Yunibāsu Apuri Monsutāzu Apumon gakuen) was illustrated by Katsumi Hirose and is serialized in Saikyō Jump.
