History[edit]
In spring of 2004, Albuquerque city leaders learned of a $1 million unused and undamaged indoor track sitting in storage in Canada that could be purchased for a mere $500,000. The state-of-the-art Mondo track had originally been ordered, then later declined, for use in the Los Angeles Staples Center arena. The track finally found a home inside the Convention Center in downtown Albuquerque and made its debut on Jan. 15, 2005 for the inaugural Albuquerque All-Comers meet, ending a 20-year absence of an indoor track in the Duke City. The Albuquerque All-Comers meet marked the University of New Mexico’s first indoor competition at home since hosting the 1987 Western Athletic Conference Championships in Tingley Coliseum at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds.[5][2]
Recent renovations[edit]
In October 2019, Mayor Tim Keller and the City Council included $2.5 million for a new indoor track in the Lodgers Tax bond package[1] devoted to the purchase of a state-of-the-art Mondo WS “hot track” in late 2020, video boards and brand new warmup areas.[6]
The City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department unveiled its brand-new indoor track in March 2021 unveiled a new, state-of the-art-indoor track at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The newly installed Mondo Track was designed and manufactured in Italy, allowing the city to host world-premier and national track events[7]. The new track replaces the City’s first indoor track, which was purchased used in 2005 and became the home of the University of New Mexico’s Track and Field Program, hosting 15 years of local, regional, and national track events[8]. The track will be the site of the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2023 and the 2023 USATF Indoor Championships.
