Expo 2020 is a Universal scale Registered Exposition time slot which can be sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), Paris between 2011 and 2014.

Parameters

As a Registered Exposition it may be a maximum of six months in length and adhere to a wide universal theme that applies to all humanity. Recent themes of Universal Expositions include "Man and His World" Montreal Expo 67, and "Discovery" Seville Expo 92.

Bids and bidding

Once a city has lodged a bid with the BIE other cities had six months to respond, with the earliest allowed time to lodge a bid is 2011, and the latest is 2014. With an early 2011 bid lodgement to the BIE, Izmir Turkey and Ayutthaya Thailand initiated the six-month window for other cities to bid. This window closed on 2 November 2011, at which point 5 cities had lodged their bids with the BIE, with Dubai making a last minute entry. It has been discussed that the BIE will vote on the winning host city on 27th of November 2013.

Five cities originally bid for the slot for a world's fair in 2020, with four remaining: Dubai, UAE; Ekaterinburg, Russia; Izmir, Turkey; or Sao Paulo, Brazil. Expo 2020 will represent a first no matter which city wins. If Dubai or Izmir win, it will be the first Middle Eastern expo. Expo 2020 will be the first Russian world's fair if Ekaterinburg wins. A Sao Paulo victory would make it the first world's fair in South America and Latin America as well as the first in the Western Hemisphere in 34 years and the first in the Southern Hemisphere in 32 years.[1]

The following cities submit their bid to BIE for hosting the 2020 EXPO:

Ayutthaya

Thailand submitted a bid in August 2020, but following a report from its own inquiry team the BIE rejected the bid on June 11 2013[9][10]

Dubai

The Dubai bid Cbjkbk

Ekaterinburg

The Russian bid The Global Mind would run from May 1 to October 31, be the second larget expo (after 2015 in Shanghai) and will "will survey world opinion through seven universal questions"[11]

İzmir

The Turkish bid would have a theme of New Routes to a Better World / Health for All and run from April 30 to October 31 [12]. A Health for All symnposium was held in October 2013 for BIE delegates and was to discuss health issues across the world[13]

São Paulo

A Brazilian expo would be called Power of Diversity, Harmony for Growth, run from May 15 to November 15 and would cover 502 hectares [14]. If it won it would be the first Latin American country to host an expo [15]
