Fort Lee High School is a four year comprehensive public high school that serves students in ninth through twelfth grade from Fort Lee, in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, as part of the Fort Lee School District.

As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,083 students and 75.1 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 14.4.[1]

History

Fort Lee High School was first established in 1916. It was relocated to its current location in 1928. A new wing was added in 1964. New classrooms were constructed in 1968. The school was completely renovated in the 1980s. The high school's physical plant has been hailed as a "model of Georgian architecture."[2]

Awards and recognition

The school was ranked 217th out of the top 1000 High Schools in the United States by Newsweek magazine.[3]

The school was the 75th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 314 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools. The school was ranked 99th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which included 316 schools across the state.[4]

The school has had several Advanced Placement Program (AP) scholars named by the College Board, five National Merit Scholarship Program semi-finalists with 18 commended students and one National Merit finalist. 38 students in the last two years have been named Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholars. The Academic Decathlon and the varsity Debate team have won numerous awards.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) will officially be instituted beginning Fall 2009 and will be coordinated by Alexis Kiefer. It will offer rigorous courses that will challenge not only the 18 selected students, but the teachers as well. The teachers are Jang Yoon, Beatriz Sarmiento, Richard Hymson, Alexander Rodriguez, and Alexis Kiefer herself. Strangely, none of the top ten percent students applied to this program claiming that AP was seemingly better for them. One student at Fort Lee pointed out that Jay Berman's statistics were incorrect, and that his acceptance rate percentages were off, or outdated. There is some question as to why the top students would not apply.

Athletics

The Fort Lee High School Bridgemen compete in the Bergen County Scholastic League (BCSL) American Conference, made up of private and public high schools located in Bergen County and Hudson County.[5]

There are allegations against one particular counselor, who has not been named yet. The terms of these counselors' tenures have not been discussed.
