The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is an Indian media centre of learning funded and promoted by the Government of India in New Delhi.[1][2] IIMC is an autonomous society under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.[3] Its one of India's premier institutes for training, teaching and research in mass communication. It was set up by the Government of India in 1965 on the recommendation of a team of internationally known mass communication specialists from UNESCO and the Ford Foundation.[4] The then Minister in charge of Information and Broadcasting, Indira Gandhi formally inaugurated the Institute on 17 August 1965.
The institute
IIMC with its headquarters at Delhi also has five Regional Centres in Aizawl (Mizoram), Amravati (Maharashtra), Dhenkanal (Odisha), Jammu (J&K) and Kottyam (Kerala). The institute stands ahead of others in its infrastructure and permanent faculty status. The per faculty student ratio is pegged at about 1:8, better than any Indian media school.
Most prominent faculties include Senior Journalist Prof. K M Srivastava, Dr. J Jethwaney, Prof. S Raghavachari, Prof. Gita Bamezai, Prof. Hemant Joshi, Shashwati Goswami, Amit Sengupta, Dr. Anand Pradhan, Dr.Anubhuti Yadav and Dr.Sunetra Narain.[5][6]
Courses
IIMC teaches a variety of disciplines including print journalism, photo journalism, radio journalism, television journalism, development communication, communication research, advertising and public relations.
It offers Postgraduate Diploma in :
- Journalism (Hindi, English and Odia )
- Radio and TV Journalism
- Advertising and Public Relations
It also offers Diploma Course in Development Journalism for non-aligned and developing countries.[7] The institute was basically set up to provide training to the officers of the Indian Information Service. The institute also conducts each year a number of specialised short-term courses to meet the training needs of media personnel working in government and public sector organizations.
An international media university
Considering the status of IIMC as an institution of exceptional excellence in the field of media and matching those of Indian Institutes of Technology, and Indian Institutes of Management, Indian government has decided to develop it as an international media university.[8]
