KOI-172.02, (K00172.02),[1][2] is an unconfirmed (Kepler Object of Interest) candidate exoplanet discovered by astronomers affiliated with the Kepler Mission space observatory and first announced on January 7, 2013.[3][4]
Candidate exoplanet
The candidate object, a Super-Earth, has a radius 1.54 times that of Earth. KOI-172.02 orbits a sun-like star, named KOI 172,[1] within the "habitable zone"[4] a zone where liquid water could exist on the surface of the planet. Scientists claim the exoplanet, if confirmed, could be a "prime candidate to host alien life".[4]
Host star and star system
The host star, KOI-172 (KIC 8692861, 2MASS J19330262+4452080),[1] is a G-type star somewhat cooler than the Sun.[4] KOI-172.02 is about 70 million miles from its host star (compared to 93 million miles between the Earth and the Sun) and takes 242 days to orbit its star (compared to our 365).[4]
