In Hinduism, Kaikesi (Devanagari: कैकसी, IAST: Kaikasi), was the mother of Ravana. She is also known as Nikasha (Devanagari: निकषा) and Keshini (Devanagari: केशिनी).[1]

Legend

She was the daughter of Rakshasa Sumali and his wife Ketumati, a Gandharva princess. She schemed with her parents to seduce the Rishi Vishrava, and through him produce a powerful, demonic offspring. Vishrava left his wife Ilavida and his son Kubera to marry Kaikesi, and through her he fathered Ravana, Vibhishana, Kumbhakarna and a daughter, Shurpanakha.

When Ravana dethroned Kubera and crowned himself King of Lanka, a disgusted Vishrava disowned his demonic family and returned to Ilavida for good.

When Ravana abducted Sita, she ordered Ravana to return Sita to her husband Rama, but he disobeyed her orders. Ravana threw Vibhishana out of Lanka as he opposed Ravana for abducting Sita. Kaikesi had ordered him to go and fight on Rama's side.

Kaikesi was featured in Raavan, a TV series which aired on Zee TV. She was portrayed by Ravee Gupta.

She was also featured in Siya Ke Ram, another TV series which aired on Star Plus. This time Pratima Kazmi played the role.
