- ^ In May 2021, Hartford's governing board voted to begin the university's process of transitioning from Division I to NCAA Division III. Under the plan, Hartford is to formally apply to the NCAA for reclassification in January 2022, stop awarding athletic scholarships to incoming students from 2022–23 onward, and join an unnamed D-III conference in 2023 before becoming a full D-III member in 2025–26.[29][30]
- ^ Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW) was founded in 2018 when Indiana University and Purdue University dissolved Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), a joint campus of the two systems that had been established in 1964.[64] With more than 90% of the continuing enrollment of IPFW being inherited by PFW, the IPFW athletic program was transferred in its entirety to PFW.[65]
- ^ UTRGV has six campuses throughout its service area, but its athletic program is based at its Edinburg campus, which it inherited from one of its predecessor institutions, the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA).
- ^ UTRGV was formally founded in 2013 by the merger of UTPA and the University of Texas at Brownsville, with instruction starting in 2015.[97] UTRGV inherited its athletic program from UTPA,[98] which was founded in 1927 as the two-year Edinburg College.
- ^ In January 2021, UTRGV explored its addition of a football team by 2024. With the WAC reinstating football at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level starting in fall 2021, UTRGV is all but certain to join WAC football.[99]
