This is a list of credit unions in the United States, in which only notable credit unions and related organizations are included. A credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative, democratically controlled by its members, and operated for the purpose of promoting thrift, providing credit at competitive rates, and providing other financial services to its members.[1] Credit unions in the United States may either be chartered by the federal government[2] or a state government.[3] The National Credit Union Administration is the U.S. independent federal agency that supervises and charters federal credit unions. As of 2012 in the United States., there were nearly 7,000 credit unions with 95 million members comprising 45.4 percent of the economically active population.[4]
