The Oceanic island nation of Nauru competed at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, from July 27 to August 12, 2012. This was the nation's fifth consecutive appearance at the Olympics.
Nauru National Olympic Committee selected two athletes to compete only in judo and weightlifting. Nauru was one of the only two nations at these Olympic games which did not send female athletes, and whose athletes did not qualify in the track and field and in swimming. This was also the second-largest team sent to the Olympics, tying with the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney for the number of athletes. Two competitors from Nauru won their spots by participating in various qualifying matches around the world. Although Nauru's earlier appearances were primarily characterized by athletes competing only in weightlifting, this nation involved its Olympic debut in judo.
Among the nation's athletes were Sled Dowabobo, the oldest member of the team at age 29, who played for the nation's sporting debut. Meanwhile, weightlifter Itte Detenamo, the first athlete from Nauru to participate in three Olympic games, reprised his role as the nation's flag bearer for the second time at the opening ceremony.
Nauru, however, has yet to win its first ever Olympic medal. Detenamo, who fulfilled his personal best in Beijing, finished fourteenth for the second time in men's super heavyweight division. Dowabobo, however, did not advance past the first round in the men's lightweight category.
Judo
Nauru won an Olympic berth in men's judo, which marked its official Olympic debut at these games. Sled Dowabobo was given a spot in the men's lightweight category, after being chosen as one of the highest ranked Oceania athletes in any sporting discipline, without having qualified.[1]
