"See You Again"
Song

"See You Again" is a song by American rapper Wiz Khalifa featuring the vocals and piano playing of American singer Charlie Puth on the hook. The song is featured in the 2015 action film Furious 7 as a tribute to Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in November 2013. The single was released on March 17, 2015 in the US, followed by an international release on April 3, and a UK release on April 12.[4]

"See You Again" was an international success, reaching number one in ninety-four countries,[5] including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States where it ended the fourteen-week reign of Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" over the Billboard Hot 100. The song holds the record for the most-streamed track in a single day on Spotify in the United States (streamed 4.2 million times on April 13, 2015), and also set the record for most streams in a single week in 26 countries during April 6 to April 12 (streamed 21.9 million times),[4][6] and also in the UK in a single week (streamed 3.72 million times from April 20 to April 26, 2015).[7]

Writing and development

Charlie Puth wrote the song on July 17, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.[8] He was approached by his publishing company, Artist Publishing Group, to come up with a melody that could pay tribute to the late Paul Walker in Furious 7 during his short stay in Los Angeles. Walking into the studio to see DJ Frank E for the first time—a session the president of Artist Publishing Group, Ben Maddahi, set up—Puth didn’t know what to expect.[9]"It just seemed to occur from out of nowhere. And basically 10 minutes later Justin and I wrote it, we sent it off, and I thought we'd never hear about it again."[10] After receiving overwhelming positive reception from the filmmakers, Universal Pictures and the soundtrack label Atlantic Records, the unfinished song which was titled "See You Again" was further commissioned by Puth and Wiz Khalifa to include verses about family around Puth's vocals and piano. The song then went through an extensive note-giving and production process.[10]

In writing the song, Puth said he was thinking of a friend who also died abruptly. Although reluctant to reveal too many details, he said that the tragedy also involved a car accident and that he felt his late friend's presence in the studio that day as he held the belief they could one day communicate again.[10] Puth, who was skeptical about whether Atlantic Records would ask him to sing on the track, thought that they chose his voice because he wrote the song for a friend of his, so he brings a more genuine feel to its words.[9] In the film, the song is played at the end of the film, during which Furious 7 characters, Brian O'Conner and Dominic Toretto drive their cars on a mountain road and eventually part ways when they reach a fork, giving Brian a poignant retirement send-off in which he'd be living with his wife and raising a family.[10]

Commercial performance

The song made its first chart appearance debuting at number 100 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[11] The song also debuted at No. 29 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 9 on the Rap Digital Songs chart selling 25,000 copies.[12][13] It topped the iTunes all-genre single sales chart, with 168,000 digital copies sold the issue dated April 18, 2015 claiming the "Digital Gainer" award. As a result, "See You Again" jumped from 84 to 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart the same week, becoming Puth's first top 10 single and Wiz Khalifa's fourth as the main artist.[14][15] Its leap from 42 to 1 on the Digital Songs chart is the largest leap to number one since will.i.am and Britney Spears' "Scream & Shout" leaped 66 to 1 in December 2012 and its 84 to 10 climb on the Hot 100 is the greatest jump into the top 10 of the chart since Katy Perry's "Roar" jumped 85-2 in August 2013.[15] In its fifth week, on the Digital Songs chart, it retained its number one position selling 464,000 copies, and jumped from number ten to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, knocking Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" off the top spot after 14 weeks at number one. This marks Wiz Khalifa's second number one song, following "Black and Yellow" in 2011 and Puth's first.[16] "See You Again" is just one of ten songs to peak at number one after having debuted at number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it is Khalifa's second song (following "Black and Yellow"), making him the only artist to have two No. 100 starters to peak at No. 1.[11] It is also the fastest to do so (in five weeks), breaking Wilbert Harrison's six weeks record of "Kansas City" in 1959.[11] It topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for five consecutive weeks, becoming the longest rap song to stay at number one by a lead solo male artist since Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" (2010, seven weeks at number one).[17] As of May 2015 the song has sold 1,698,000 copies in the U.S.[18]

In New Zealand, the song debuted on the New Zealand Singles Chart at number 34 on the chart dated 30 March 2015.[19] In its third week on the chart, the song rose to the top spot, giving both Khalifa and Puth their first number-one single in the country, also giving Khalifa his third top-ten single as a lead artist, after "Young, Wild & Free" in 2011 and "We Own It" in 2013 (from the soundtrack to the previous film, Fast & Furious 6).[20] The song jumped from number 59 to 1 in Australia on 11 April 2015 for the week beginning 13 April 2015, making it the biggest leap to number one in Australian chart history.[21] It is also Khalifa and Puth their first number-one in the country.[21]

In the United Kingdom, "See You Again" debuted at number 22 on April 12, 2015 due to streaming alone, having been streamed 1.8 million times that week.[22] Following its download release the following week, the song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart on April 19, 2015, selling 193,000 copies and becoming the fastest-selling single of 2015 so far.[23] It also broke the UK streaming record, with a total of 3.68 million streams that week.[23] It marks the second time for Khalifa has topped the charts in Britain following his guest appearance on Maroon 5's "Payphone" in June and July 2012, and Puth's first.[23] The following week it sold 142,000 copies, still remaining atop and broke its own streaming record with 3.72 million streams.[7] Following two weeks at number one, "See You Again" fell to number two, having been overtaken by Omi's "Cheerleader" despite having higher sales in that week. It marks only the third time in chart history that the official number one single did not also top the sales chart of that week.[24]

Music video

Directed by Marc Klasfeld,[2] Wiz Khalifa premiered online the official music video on April 6, 2015, as tribute to Paul Walker, who acted as Brian O'Conner in most of the Fast & Furious films. In the video, Khalifa goes to the hills to perform his rap as Charlie Puth plays the piano. Some of Walker's scenes from the Fast & Furious franchise appear throughout the video. In the last scene of the video, which is also the final scene of Furious 7, characters Toretto (Vin Diesel) and O'Conner (played by Paul's brother Cody due to Paul's death) drive away via different routes; the camera concludes with a panning shot of O'Conner driving into the sunset, signifying the real life death of Paul Walker in a spiritual and celebratory manner. As of May 19, 2015, the video has garnered over 280 million views on YouTube.

Live performances

Khalifa performed the song live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in March 2015. The song was also performed by Khalifa on The Voice in April 2015 with season 7 runner-up Chris Jamison.[25] Vin Diesel also performed the song live as a tribute to Walker during the 2015 MTV Movie Awards.[26] Khalifa and Puth performed the song again live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in April 2015.[27] Khalifa and Puth performed the song again live on Saturday Night Live on May 2, 2015.
