Sophie, Princess of Windisch-Graetz (born Archduchess Sophie Franziska Maria Germaine of Austria, 19 January 1959) is a member by birth of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, and by marriage of the Austrian House of Windisch-Graetz.

Biography

Sophie was born on 19 January 1959, the daughter of Archduke Ferdinand Karl Max of Austria and Countess Helene of Törring-Jettenbach. Her father was a first cousin of Otto of Habsburg, the last Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary, and her mother was a daughter of Princess Elizabeth of Greece and Denmark, the sister of Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. Through her mother she is related to Queen Sofía of Spain and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, making her a distant cousin of Charles, Prince of Wales, and also a second cousin of the current Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and actress Catherine Oxenberg.

As Sophie Habsburg, she moved to Spain to pursue a career as a model and became an international jet set personality.[citation needed] She had worked as a fashion journalist in Madrid, before marrying the head of the House of Windisch-Graetz, the German-Italian prince Mariano Hugo of Windisch-Graetz on 11 February 1990 in Salzburg. The bride wore a Valentino gown.[1]

She later developed a career as a handbag designer.[2]
