The Soviet Union had several kinds of country subdivisions:

Types of the subdivisions:
  Raions directly subordinated to the respective republics.
  Oblasts.
  Krais.
  ASSRs (autonomous republics).
  Autonomous oblasts subordinated to a krai.
  Autonomous okrugs subordinated to an oblast or a krai.
