Super Mario Run is an upcoming endless runner platformer video game developed by Nintendo for mobile phones. It is scheduled for release on first iOS in December 2016, and on Android at a later date.

Gameplay

The game will play as a side-scrolling endless runner platformer game.[1] The player controls Mario; he automatically runs from right to left, but the player must tap the touch screen to make Mario jump.[1] The longer the screen is touched, the higher Mario jumps.[2] Like classic Super Mario games, the player must maneuver Mario over gaps, onto enemies, and into coins to collect them.[1] The end goal is for the player to safely get Mario through the level in the fastest time possible.[1]

In addition to the main game, there is a separate "Toad Rally" game mode where players can challenge "ghost" versions of other player's play throughs of levels, similar to the time attack modes found in most Mario Kart entries.[3] Playing either game mode earn the player coins that can be used to buy items for creating and customizing their own "Mushroom Kingdom" in a separate, third gameplay mode.[1]

Development and release

The game was first announced by Shigeru Miyamoto on September 7, 2016, at Apple Inc.'s yearly iPhone event.[4] It is the first Mario game to be released on mobile phones.[5] The game will come at a set price, rather than employ a freemium pay model, though in-app purchases will be available.[2] The game's price was not announced at the event.[2] The game is scheduled for release on iOS devices in December 2016.[1] Nintendo later confirmed that the game is scheduled for Android as well.[6] For the iOS release, the game will play on both iPhones and iPads.[7]

The game uses 2.5D graphics similar to the game New Super Mario Bros. video games.[8]
