Oppose move to 2011 IHOP shooting[edit]

I moved this article back to Carson City shooting because the shooting didn't take place just in the IHOP. Also if there is another shooting in Carson City this year, we can work on a rename then. Karl 334 TALK to ME 14:14, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Where else were there shootings? The article only refers to shootings in (or at) the IHOP location. Also, seems the majority of sources refer to the incident in connection with the IHOP restaurant. The title of the article should be changed back, per WP:COMMONNAME.Boneyard90 (talk) 08:15, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Check the search and hit stats. If more people are typing IHOP shooting, I would be in favor of moving it back. Karl 334 Talk--Contribs 14:23, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Google search for:
  • "Carson city shooting" = 23,200
  • "IHOP shooting" = 402,000

2011 IHOP shootingCarson City IHOP shooting – The current title is way too vague and implies a shooting occurred in an IHOP located somewhere in the U.S. Implementing Carson City into the title will help make the article title more specific. Love of Corey (talk) 20:41, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with Nevada IHOP shooting. That's still a bit too general and implies the shooting took place in an IHOP located somewhere in Nevada. Not exactly the best way to narrow things down. Love of Corey (talk) 06:45, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is how WP:RSs are referring to the shooting. Per WP:COMMONNAME we should follow the name they use. Incidentally, this was a shooting that took place at an IHOP somewhere in Nevada and the title does narrow it down, as it's the only one. https://www.reuters.com/article/shooting-nevada-idUSN1E78513Q20110907, https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/nevada-ihop-attack-leaves-5-dead-including-gunman-1.1060064, https://www.foxnews.com/us/gunman-kills-two-national-guard-members-one-other-in-shooting-rampage-at-nevada-ihop, https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-14813982 Combefere ❯❯❯ Talk 09:24, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The same thing with references applies to Sutherland Springs church shooting, yet here we are with that title. Love of Corey (talk) 21:09, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I was going to argue that that one is incorrectly titled as well, since most RSs refer to it as the Texas Church Shooting. However, after reviewing the List of mass shootings in the United States, it appears that only one shooting in the 21st century was named after a state instead of a city or university - the January 2019 Louisiana shootings. And even though it's supported by RSs, it's a bad name: "Louisiana Shooting" on Google doesn't return any results for the mass shooting on the first few pages. When weighing WP:CRITERIA, I suppose precision and consistency are more important than recognizability in this case. Given the consistency of other page titles for mass shootings and the concerns for future-proofing the title by making it more precise, I'll change my vote to support 2011 IHOP shootingCarson City IHOP shooting Combefere ❯❯❯ Talk 02:30, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, pretty much. As for January 2019 Louisiana shootings, I think the article is only titled that way because the only other reasonable title would have to mention the suspect's name, following the example of Christopher Dorner shootings and manhunt, but the suspect is still alive and on trial, thereby raising WP:BLPCRIME concerns.
