Quotes by Afshin Naghouni[edit]

Afshin has been quoted numerous times. His best quotes come from interviews on YouTube or news sources such as the BBC. He’s a laid back person who says very beautiful and profound things. He seems to be a philosopher at heart (like many of us are), but he is more of a teacher without perhaps wanting to be a teacher. It seems very natural. Is there a limit on how many times to quote the subject of a WP article? Maybe add quotes to wikicommons, wikidata? Kkenya (talk) 10:48, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kkenya, usually we try to limit the number of quotations in Wikipedia articles, and especially quotes from the subject of the article. This is for two main reasons: first, Using too many quotations is incompatible with the encyclopedic writing style (per WP:LONGQUOTE); and second, Wikipedia aims to rely on independent secondary sources. Primary sources like self-quotes are not technically forbidden, but critically they are neither independent nor secondary. So they do not contribute much to the style of encyclopedic writing that is required on Wikipedia.
In my view, the "rose petal" quote in the "London" section is a good example of an unnecessary quote, and I have removed it on this basis. Thanks, /wiae /tlk 22:03, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your reply is a bit of a relief and quite perfect timing. His page was getting more incongruous the more I worked on it and his quotes needed to be addressed. He has many more. They need to be written but not ia his article. I do appreciate your help. Thank you.Kkenya (talk) 00:22, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Kkenya (talk) 23:48, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Likewise, you'll see in this edit that I've significantly trimmed down the "An Abstract Sense of Life" section to avoid improperly including copyrighted text in the article, to reduce the size of the quote (not all of which was essential to understand the critic's idea), and to generally rewrite the text from a more neutral lens. /wiae /tlk 22:09, 2 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Answering a question regarding his painting beautiful layers on very ugly or hard truths: “We usually justify our actions by glorifying and prettifying them. Realities such as “invasion,” “ethnic cleansing,” “objectification,” “brutality and torture” are usually hidden behind concepts such as “liberation,” “right to defend” and “necessary force.’”— Afshin Naghouni in Nuit Magazine .-Kkenya (talk) 00:22, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Kkenya (talk) 22:46, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiquote.org[edit]

I’ve read what’s been written about Afshin Naghouni and listen to audio of interviews with Afshin. In researching sources for his article I’ve listened to long stretches of dialogue until I had what I needed for a citation. I prefer that to transcripts because I hear it myself.

I’m creating a page for him on Wikiquote.org because I will have and I want to to cite every source. Compiling his quotes will take a while then need credible sources to cite. Wikiquote is filled with quotes from dead people. Those quotes get in-lined links directly to their Wikipedia pages. With living people such as Afshin, the in-line link goes to their wikiquote page which references their Wikipedia page. (Edit of grammar Kkenya (talk) 16:34, 3 January 2023 (UTC))[reply]

Which kind of sources are not going to work on wikiquote.org? Will social media sites suffice if needed? Kkenya (talk) 16:21, 3 January 2023 (UTC) Kkenya (talk) 16:20, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The illusion that exalts us is dearer than ten thousand truths — Afshin Naghouni, stories on Facebook Kkenya (talk) 16:36, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Kkenya, the short answer is that every project under the Wikimedia umbrella is different, each with its own policies and practices. Wikiquote likely has different "inclusion criteria" (what kind of text they allow and disallow) from the English-language Wikipedia, and so your best bet here would be to look around Wikiquote itself for relevant policies and guidelines. I have never edited Wikiquote so I cannot say definitively what their rules may be, but the Wikiquote:Quotability guideline looks like a good place to start.
FYI, if you have questions specifically about the English-language Wikipedia, you may wish to consult the WP:TEAHOUSE, a friendly place to ask questions and get answers from experienced editors. You can always ask questions here too, but not many people are likely to check this talk page, so you will likely get faster (and more thorough) answers over at the Teahouse. /wiae /tlk 16:40, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are still too many quotes on this article, which is why the template was left for clean up today. PigeonChickenFish (talk) 05:42, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kkenya it appears much of the content relies interviews or what he has said which is largely not useful. What is needed are independent reputable sources that have written about his work and about his activism. Can you obtain some critical review reviews of his work? Right now his career as an artist looks pitiful after I cleaned up the poor prose and sourcing. I think Lovatt is valuable but we need the actual review along the other known critics. I am assuming he has other reviews about other works as well. S0091 (talk) 20:53, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you saying. And I appreciate you picking up on the nuances for lack of a better way to say thatKkenya (talk) 21:00, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t even feel comfortable putting one of them on wiki quote. That was a whole different project Kkenya (talk) 21:02, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
