I've removed the line about the Avon Gorge being carved by a glacier. Not credible given the width, elevation and complete lack of evidence of glaciation. Its creation is still uncertain, but that can be ruled out. User:Fremsley 16:29, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
GA Reassessment
[edit]This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Avon Gorge/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment. This article has been reviewed as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force in an effort to ensure all listed Good articles continue to meet the Good article criteria. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, listed below. I will check back in seven days. If these issues are addressed, the article will remain listed as a Good article. Otherwise, it may be delisted (such a decision may be challenged through WP:GAR). If improved after it has been delisted, it may be nominated at WP:GAN. Feel free to drop a message on my talk page if you have any questions, and many thanks for all the hard work that has gone into this article thus far.
- I'm dubious that this article deals adequately with the major points of its subject. The Geology and formation section seems rather short, and the gorge's microclimate is mentioned only in passing. (Is that 1 degree C or F?).
- Basic facts about the gorge seem to be missing. How long is it? How deep is it?
- The article tells me that "Throughout Bristol's history the gorge has been an important transport route." Important in what way? When? From where to where?
- There are four requests for citations in the Ecology section.
- All but the first paragraph of History of human use is uncited.
- The link given in note #6 is dead.
- It's surprising to see only one book listed in the Bibliography.

- I believe that many of the issues raised above have been addressed (although I'm unable to find a source saying whether the degree is F or C). The length is given in the lede & I've added the width and depth at the suspension bridge. A lot of other citations have been provided. I would be grateful if you would take another look and let us know if there are other improvements you feel need to be made.— Rod talk 21:05, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
- Given that it's about a degree it probably doesn't matter much, at least for GA anyway. I'm happy with the work that's been done, particularly in providing citations, so I'm closing this review as a keep. Well done and thanks to everyone who worked on this. --Malleus Fatuorum (talk) 21:26, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

What else is needed to get this article to FA
[edit]This article has now been a fairly stable Good Article for over three years and I am looking for ideas about what would be needed to get it to meet the Wikipedia:Featured article criteria? This is one part of the Featured topic about Physical geography of Somerset. The rules about FT's have changed and we need to get one of the GAs included in the topic up to FA status or the whole FT will be demoted to a Good topic. Any ideas appreciated.— Rod talk 21:03, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Length of gorge
[edit]It's not immediately apparent to me where the stated length comes from but it does seem to slightly under-represent the feature. The sides begin to close in a few hundred metres downstream of the A3029 Brunel Way bridge and open up once again near Sneyd Park, arguably 2 miles distant. Of course, one person's gorge is another steep-sided valley, but is there a reference? Geopersona (talk) 10:21, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
