Icelandic name template

[edit]

@Grimes2: The wording produced by this template is confusing. It appears to say that the article should refer to him by his first name, and this is also implied by the template documentation. See also the template talk discussion "Why?". Jmar67 (talk) 00:34, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's a patronymic (Icelandic name), the father's name of Benedikt Kristjánsson is Kristján. We should use Benedikt in the text. Grimes2 (talk) 01:28, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No concert program, review, recording does that. I am not sure we should. For women, we fight surname only as suggesting too much intimacy with the subject. Template or not, I'm afraid the same might be thought here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:33, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Most Icelandic people article (example: Aron Gunnarsson) in Wikipedia use this name convention. The template at the beginning of the article explains this name convention. (You are thinking not Icelandic.) Grimes2 (talk) 07:40, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As explaind in the other discussion, I'm thinking of him in an international context, where most of our readers also come from. For an Icelandic politician or scientist, active mostly in Iceland, I'd agree immediately. For him, singing in the world, I hesitate. We explain Chinese and Hungarian names once, then use standard names and order. Could we do the same here? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:18, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The problem for me is that all the sources list him by first and last name. So cannot get a good idea if he uses Icelandic naming or not. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:46, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I asked Benedikt Kristjánsson what he would prefer. He answered: Kristjánsson. Grimes2 (talk) 19:08, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I considered doing that. Which reminds me that it would be good to record such direct interactions with the article subject. Is there a process for this? Jmar67 (talk) 20:02, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
