One question - on watching the TV film about Brooke Ellison it said she graduated from Harvard with a degree at the level of summa cum laude, "with highest honor"; direct translation: "with highest praise" .

Does this page need to be amended to reflect this? Paulw99 17:22, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's the usual conventional translation of that phrase, even if not literal. Cum Laude is likewise usually rendered "With honors". See Latin honors. -- Fan-1967 17:24, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see your question. Google search seems pretty split, with both magna and summa. Her speakers bureau agency [1] says summa, for what that's worth, and clearly the movie said summa (though TV movies sometimes take a few liberties). Don't know what would be a reliable source to be sure. Fan-1967 17:32, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Harvard Crimson student paper [2] says magna, and you'd think they'd get it right. Hmmmm... Fan-1967 17:34, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh it wasn't my intention to cause a problem, I was just seeing something to me that looked like a different grade of degree to what she actually had. She remains a very talented women. Paulw99 17:40, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it seems that whichever it is, a lot of the sources out there are being sloppy. I'd think it more likely that the TV people would upgrade it for dramatic effect than that people would mistakenly downgrade it. So, at a guess, I'd think the magna's more likely (it gets more google hits), but that's just an educated guess. Fan-1967 17:59, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
