Kotikal and Mahishasuramardini Cave Temples
[edit]I am not an expert in this field by any means, but while annotating some photographs I have noted some apparent errors that cut across several articles, and need investigation by someone with better expertise than I.
The picture given for Kotikal Cave Temple / Kotikal Mandapa ( Kotikal_Mandapa.jpg ) in Cave Temples of Mahabalipuram and also List of Monuments of National Importance in Kanchipuram district seems to be actually the Mahishasuramardini Cave Temple / Mandapa. Evidence:
(a) It does not fit the verbal description of the Kotikal Cave Temple in Cave Temples of Mahabalipuram (e.g. "The rock cut façade has two supporting pillars and two pilasters").
(b) The monument depicted as Kotikal is described by the Archaeological Survey of India site as Mahishasuramardini: [1]
(c) My own photographs (from a visit in 2010) tie the temple shown in Kotikal_Mandapa.jpg with the interior carvings described and depicted in Mahishasuramardini Mandapa
A source of confusion is that although the Archaeological Survey lists Kotikal Mandapa as separate from Mahishamardini Rock Cut Mandapa ( [2] ), it does not give a picture of it, and at least three different temples are described on the Net as the Kotikal Mandapa.
I do not know the identity of the cave temple depicted in Mahishamardini_Rock_Cut_Mandapam.JPG and used in Mahishasuramardini Mandapa and List of Monuments of National Importance in Kanchipuram district . It is in my Mahabalipuram photographs, but unfortunately I did not record how it was signposted.

Krishna and Panchapandava Cave Temples
[edit]Likewise, there seems to be a great deal of confusion between Krishna Cave Temple and the Panchapandava Cave Temple. If these are different, then the pictures Krishna_Mantap.jpg and Mahabalipuram_Cave_another_side.JPG (both showing a façade with six free-standing columns) illustrating Krishna Cave Temple are actually the Panchapandava Cave Temple (compare Pandava_Cave_Temple,_Mahabalipuram.jpg and General_view_of_the_entrance_to_the_Pancha_Pandava_Mandapa,_Mahabalipuram.jpg). The picture General_view_of_the_entrance_to_the_Krishna_Mandapa.jpg shows a very different façade with four free-standing columns (for modern pictures, see [3] photos 1 & 12), and the Krishna carvings are behind columns with similar capitals to these.
[4] distinguishes the two.
However both are very close to the 'Arjuna's Penance'/'Descent of the Ganges' rock carving, with the Panchapandava façade immediately next to the rock. It is possible that they are two façades of the same temple; unfortunately I cannot remember from my own visit. The Archaeological Survey of India's list ( [5] ) includes 'Krishna Mandapam' but not the Panchapandava. If they are the same, of course, they should not have separate Wikipedia pages, nor separate listings on Cave Temples of Mahabalipuram
