Copyrighted and promotional content
[edit]This article has been plagued with numerous copyright issues. The most recent run has clearly been copied from this website. This is not acceptable, per WP:COPYRIGHT. Such material is also very WP:ADVERT like and not up to encyclopedic content. I've had to delete this article for repeated violations of this policy. Please stop doing it. hbdragon88 (talk) 05:18, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- This must indeed be a very tenuous 'B' quality status, it gives the impression of being self-promotional and admittedly, the University webmaster has not hidden the fact they've been behind the article! I've added a 'citations needed' box, removed the inline links to the university website pages and added a section on the University's buildings - apparently it has a new addition by Daniel Liebskind, which is certainly notable. Bias in rankings presentation
[edit]Wikipedia is not supposed to be promoting the university. The current presentation of rankings emphasises the highest rankings (either by survey or by subset), while not even mentioning the actual overall ranking given by the renowned THES rankings! All relevant rankings must be presented without bias, or none at all. —DIV (137.111.13.4 (talk) 23:26, 21 January 2016 (UTC))
- If I were qualified on this topic, I'd fix it. Use the Wikipedia live chat (forgot where it is, but hunt around for it) to contact someone and see if they can help. Thanks for pointing this out.Widgetdog (talk) 23:29, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
- You can see already some of my insertions were effectively reverted. I.E. trying to hide the true overall ARWU ranking, for some reason?
- —DIV (137.111.13.4 (talk) 07:39, 22 January 2016 (UTC))
- And now I receive this message from User:Robertmmq1:
- "== CityU article is within the scope of WikiProject Hong Kong. We would like you to refrain from revising it. It has been close to a disruptive editing. Probably you can just focus on articles about Macquarie University or Korean language. Thank you. Once you read this message, it will be deleted from your page."
- Firstly, there is generally no restriction on editing articles by any user just because the article happens to be within the scope of a WikiProject. (Cf. WP:BURO, WP:NPOV.)
- Secondly, I reiterate that Wikipedia is not a place for promotion of things or people.
- Thirdly, I would like any who disagree with my edits to firstly explain themself here, before making further reversions. For example, it is more objective to give the range of rankings given overall, by reputable sources, in the Intro, rather than to selectively cherry-pick only those that cast CityU in the best possible light.
- Fourthly, my editing does not rate as "disruptive". You can see that, for example, I backed my changes with references (verifiable), and further initiated and engaged in discussion on this Talk page (encouraging consensus). In contrast, the reversions were arguably more disruptive, in that they were made without discussion, and without a convincing rationale (e.g. why should the data I added be omitted??).
- Finally, it is actually preferred if staff and students at an institution do not edit their own institution's page. This is both to prevent actual biased editing and perceived biased editing. This, along with my second point, is in the same spirit as the (strong) WP recommendation that says don't create or edit your own personal WP article (i.e. any article about yourself should be a biography, not an autobiography; see also WP:PROUD). Remember that one of fundamental principle of Wikipedia is that "All encyclopedic content on Wikipedia must be written from a neutral point of view (NPOV)".

redirects instead of piped links
[edit]Hi @Matthew hk:, you reverted my edit which deleted a piped link which was unnecessary. Please see WP:NOPIPE and perhaps reconsider. If you think the redirect shouldn't exist, you can nominate it at RfD. Doanri (talk) 09:49, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Copyright violations and plagiarism
[edit]I've just noticed that large parts of the Library section has been copied from [1] and only very slightly modified. For how copyright violations are to be dealt with, see WP:DCV. Some people on talk have suggested that the copyvio edits have been made by CityU's webmaster, in that case, it might be an option for the webmaster to release the content of the website under a Wikipedia-appropriate licence. Doanri (talk) 18:28, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Regarding speedy
[edit]The page was full of coi, copyvio edits that mixed with genuine third party such as "controversially shut down its MFA programme in creative writing", so it may be not appropriate to just speedy delete the page. Instead, it may need cleanup team, given the talk page was full of complaints on peacock terms and promotional tones. The page did deleted in 2009 by Hbdragon88 for speedy G12. Matthew_hk tc 04:33, 4 October 2018 (UTC)
- The whole article would need to be revdelled; it is shot through with COPYVIO from a long time ago. Needs to be done over from scratch. Jytdog (talk) 04:43, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Location
[edit]City University of Hong Kong actually in Sham Shui Po District, not Kowloon City District. However, people in Hong Kong in fact seldom associate place to District but neighbourhood. However, the boundary of neighbourhoods were never able to be defined, as Hong Kong did not have that level of administrative subdivision (election constituency is never actually works as an administrative area, the local seats and the district council, most of the time was a rubber stamp and an advisory to the executive branch of the government). CityU can be associated with Yau Yat Tsuen or Kowloon Tong neighbourhood, but in election it was in Yau Yat Tsuen (constituency). Since the uni did not officially associate the uni to either neighbourhood in their official website, so better dropping neighbourhood in the mention. Matthew hk (talk) 08:09, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "in the mention"? Can you please clarify? The way you write doesn't seem to suggest that you are from Hong Kong. 124.217.188.145 (talk) 01:19, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
- This thread was meant to explain that people adding Kowloon City District into the article was wrong. And as usual, instead of personal attack i am not HKer, please bring reliable source to this talk page, that have the EXACT boundary of Kowloon Tong, which in turn prove City U on doubt as part of Kowloon Tong (which such RS is never exist, as no one define the HK neighbourhood legally or have authority to author a book that claim his book represented the community defined boundary of a neighbourhood). This official source even use
九龍塘又一村
https://www.cityu.edu.hk/zh-hk/media/news/2021/10/22/cityu-presents-post-war-hong-kong-and-story-tat-chee-avenue-exhibition, while this official source list some building in Kowloon Tong and some in Shek Kip Mei (南山樓 is just next to the main building AC1 (楊建文學術樓)? Seriously they really so messy, and considered on the address that 南山樓 is in Shek Kip Mei as official address, 南山苑 that next to 南山樓 is Kowloon Tong, as well as AC1 also in Kowloon Tong?)

Edit warring by Donovanjustin
[edit]@Donovanjustin: We write "Hong Kong" on Wikipedia, there is no need to write "Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" in the first sentence. It's clumsy and unnecessary. "Schools" is used in a general sense in the lede. The lede paragraph is where basic facts are introduced, such as the year the university was founded. Lastly, you are reminded AGAIN that if you have a conflict of interest you NEED TO DISCLOSE IT. Wikipedia is an ENCYCLOPEDIA, not a vehicle for promotion. Citobun (talk) 03:23, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
Disambiguation hatnote
[edit]User:Citobun has attempted to remove from this article[2] a hatnote which is comparable to those in other similar articles such as City University of New York, Nagoya City University and Dublin City University. And when he/she did so he coupled in his/her edits unexplained reverts of other unrelated changes to the article.[3] He/she has been reminded at WP:RFPP[4] that he/she should seek consensus here in this talk page if he/she'd propose something in contrary to the common practice and in the edit summaries[5] not to tie-in unexplained reverts. 124.217.188.145 (talk) 09:51, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
- Well my argument would be that the hatnote is basically pointless because the names of the universities are different and therefore would not be confused. But whatever. I do have to roll my eyes at a long-term, IP-hopping, revert-warring editor reminding me how to work constructively on Wikipedia. Citobun (talk) 10:01, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
- Do you mean the names would not be confusing? 124.217.188.145 (talk) 17:54, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
- Please read Wikipedia:Hatnote guideline. Matthew hk (talk) 00:48, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
The Hongkong Standard
[edit]Regarding the question in the edit summary https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=City_University_of_Hong_Kong&diff=1054179645&oldid=1054162981: It's surprising to know that this would be something which gotta be asked. If you had read this newspaper before its name was changed to the iMail then to the Standard you wouldn't have asked this question. It was how its name was spelt, just like Hongkong Hilton, Hongkong Land, the Hongkong Electric Company, Hongkong Post or the HongkongBank. You can search for images online. Please do revert your request for page protection since that was clearly made because of your misunderstanding. 203.145.95.32 (talk) 20:59, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
- Here are some examples of online pictures.[6][7][8] 203.145.95.32 (talk) 22:01, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
- We should use the newspaper name at the time of publishing. The newspaper was known as Hongkong Standard in 1983. But probably Citobun made something wrong if he add space between Hong Kong in HK Standard. Just don't change it to iMail either as there is no iMail in 1983. Matthew hk (talk) 00:45, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

I can't get what you mean? Something like "H K"? And why just 1983? 203.145.95.32 (talk) 03:11, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

Hyperlinks to the actual districts, Template:Convert, etc.
[edit]What's the point to undo edits like this, Citobun? [9] [10] 203.145.95.32 (talk) 21:11, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

- To reinstate the hyperlink to the articles for the two districts (as opposed to the areas), the {{convert}} tags, and the outdated tag (there are now more than eight universities in the territory), as referred to in the message above. 203.145.95.32 (talk) 05:57, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
- There are now eleven universities in the territory, if we only count those with the word "university" in their names and exclude those schools, colleges or campuses of foreign universities in Hong Kong. 203.145.95.32 (talk) 12:20, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
- Not done: Please list the change in separate requests.
- Also, read WP:hatnote. We don't spam hatnote . Except another CUHK (or the real CUHK as City University usually use CityU as abb.), there is no other closely resembled article titles. Matthew hk (talk) 06:19, 10 November 2021 (UTC)
- What to do with hatnote or the Chinese University? What's making CityU "unreal"? 203.145.95.128 (talk) 04:09, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

- {{convert}} is put back in per MOS:CONVERSIONS. Mention of Chu Koo Chai is put back in with a reference. I don't have access to the reference for the districting, so left as-is (and it honestly works either way). IP, please create new edit requests for the others. No comment on the outdated tag, though a reference would help here. IP, please file new edit requests with one change per request. ◢ Ganbaruby! (talk) 09:05, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Tat Chee Avenue

To add a hyperlink for this road under the Campus section with the template and parameters {{ill|Tat Chee Avenue|yue|達之路|zh-tw|達之路}}. 203.145.95.32 (talk) 21:11, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
- Partly done: Adds
{{ill|Tat Chee Avenue|yue|達之路|zh|達之路}}
to the infobox instead —twotwofourtysix(My talk page and contributions) 00:12, 9 November 2021 (UTC)- Thank you twotwofourtysix. 203.145.95.32 (talk) 03:25, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
- Some offtopic. The edit by another ip that use land lot as address is definitely wrong (Special:Diff/1053180450) as land lot is not used in day to day life (May be buying a house and the legal doc use it, but else? During land sale?) And the official address in the bottom of https://www.cityu.edu.hk/ is
Tat Chee Avenue Kowloon, Hong Kong
, dont even have neighbourhood or street number (so that avoiding the argument it is Kowloon Tong" or Yau Yat Tsuen, as primary source did not even use either one). Matthew hk (talk) 01:34, 9 November 2021 (UTC)- There are cases where using lot numbers is necessary. It may not be necessary for this particular case but that certainly isn't something "definitely wrong" or "not used in day to day [sic] life". 203.145.95.32 (talk) 03:25, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
- Self correct. The main webpage did not list the neighbourhood, but the other page has neighbourhood listed https://www.cityu.edu.hk/about/campus/opening-hours. The uni say it is part of Kowloon Tong then we just follow it. Matthew hk (talk) 01:59, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
...just follow it
Information from official websites is often good source of reference but may not necessarily be something we should "just follow it". 203.145.95.32 (talk) 03:25, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
Hyperlinks to the actual districts
[edit]This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
Resubmission as a new request per Ganbaruby: To reinstate the hyperlinks to the actual districts, as opposed to the namesake neighbourhood within these districts.[11] [12] The references for doing so would be the articles on these districts and neighbourhoods themselves. 203.145.95.63 (talk) 11:34, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
- No evidence that the text should refer to the District Council district rather than the areas in a general sense. Citobun (talk) 13:21, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
Outdated tag
[edit]This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
Resubmission as a new request per Ganbaruby, as above: To reinstate the outdated tag, since there are now eleven tertiary educational institutions in the territory which bear university in their names or are equivalence of universities which status is established by the law of the territory.[13] [14] Alternatively, to replace the word eight with eleven direct.[15] 203.145.95.63 (talk) 11:34, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
- Incoherent request by disruptive, abusive IP editor. I have no clue what change you want made. Citobun (talk) 13:19, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
