Revisions

[edit]

I've made some major revisions to this article, but since I haven't seen the movie in at least 5 years I'm not gonna stand by all of them. I cleaned up the text considerably, removed references to the freaks (sorry if that offends, but it is obviously a part of Jodorowsky's conception of how they will be perceived, as is reinforced by later work like Santa Sangre) as 'mutants' (see it was worse), added a number of details about the plot, added an interpretation section, moved the info about John Lennon to an "Other" section (not really needed to be mentioned in the intro graf, IMO), and probably a few other things I can't remember. forgot to sign: --Andymussell 04:11, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The "Interpretations" section looks to me like it might be original research. Is there a source? --Misterwindupbird 09:08, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to be a conflict between the summary and the trivia. In the summary, it says that there was no finished sequel to El Topo, but in the Trivia, it says that the sequel was called Holy Mountain (which was finished). Which version is correct?
Follow-up, not a sequel. Perhaps this was already correct, or was corrected after you posted. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by SlipGun (talkcontribs) 06:32, 18 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Buying the film

[edit]

This film doesn't seem to be available anywhere within the UK. Does anybody know if it's actually available for purchase? --^pirate 16:08, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

merge Abelcain into sequel section?

[edit]

The film Abelcain seem to be on hold indefinitely, and it seems unlikely the article stub is going to be added to any time soon. I suggest what little info is on that page be merged here so that people interested in El Topo can get all their info in one place. This will also keep news of the sequel from getting out of synk by keeping it all together. If the sequel gets back into production, we could always re-create the page.

Discuss.

Okay, since nobody seems to object, I merged the Abelcain info into El Topo and added some info from the article on Jodorowsky. --Mr Wind-Up Bird 17:28, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Introductory Quote

[edit]

I looked up this article hoping to find the exact quote about from the beginning of the film (about the mole being blinded by the light). There is an interpretation here, but not the quote itself. It would be nice to include it. (Can't help with this myself. If I knew it I wouldn't be here.) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ericfluger (talkcontribs) 18:03, 24 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Re-write

[edit]

I'm thinking of rewriting the plot. There are a lot of grammer errors as well as a lot of past tense telling of the plot like "During their journey they found a lifeless town", generally when telling a plot you tell it as a present tense type of thing. "During their journey they find a lifeless town". It also jumps from using a past tense to present tense and back again.

"Mara convinced El Topo to defeat the four great gun masters to become the greatest gunman in the land."

"The man claims to be impervious to bullets stating that "he offers them no resistance," and even demonstrates this ability."

As an example of other plots written, from Star Wars: "En route to Alderaan, Obi-Wan instructs Luke in the Force. When they arrive at their destination, all they find is a hail of debris." It is not written in a past tense.

I would think that it would read better if this was cleaned up. Anyone object to this?

Also, what would lead one to believe that the first master was a hermaphodite? I didn't see that at all or an implication that he was one. He was feminine but that doesn't mean anything. Has this been something that has been stated by the film maker?

Fair use rationale for Image:El Topo 0000.jpg

Image:El Topo 0000.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. "Acid Western"

[edit]

"Acid Western" does not equal "Psychedelic Western". It's not a catch-all term referring to far-out variations on the standard western tropes. That's like saying Film Noir includes all black-and-white WWII war films.

I'm putting this here instead of changing the entry because I have not seen El Topo, but nothing I've read or heard about it suggest it has anything to do with the idea of the Acid Western. This is a call for someone else who has seen it and can confirm the shoe does not fit to please be in a hurry to revoke the category. Danwroy (talk) 01:19, 28 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hijo

[edit]

This article uses "Hijo" as it was the name of the son of El Topo. It's not a name, it just means "son" or "child". During the film, he's not called that way as it was his name or nickname, and he's referred that way in the credits just as if he was a nameless character only defined by being the son of the protagonist. Mexican?

[edit]

Can someone explain to me why this film is described as a Mexican film, when it was written, scored, directed by and stars Jodorowsky, who's Chilean.VenomousConcept (talk) 02:43, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Films production country is not based off the nationality of the director, its based on where the production funding comes from. In other words, where the production or funding is based. Same reason when John Woo comes to America to make Face/Off, it's not a Hong Kong or a Chinese film, but an American one. Andrzejbanas (talk) 03:08, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion

[edit]

Considering how significant and influential El Topo is, it's sad to see the artile on it in such a state of underdevelopment. There is no information in the film's themes, production, release, and legacy. All of this should be added in those sections, which should be created and expanded from reliable sources and proper citations. The Production section should have sub sections pertaining to the film's development, casting, filming, and, if significant enough, the film's post production. Soundtrack from the film should also have its own section as well as the influences on the film. Information on the film's theatrical and home media releases should be added and any censorship the film recieved should be included in this section as well. The Themes and Legacy section is pretty self explanitory so there is no need to go into any depth on what is needed for that. In all this article beeds to be expanded to its fullest and best capacity, as per Wikipiedia's guidelines and standards. Hlpefully someone that is both skilled and passionate enough about this film will give this article the attention it needs to be the best it can be.--Paleface Jack (talk) 17:59, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
