disambig
[edit]In WP:FARM, dipping refers to making livestock walk or swim through an antiseptic bath. A disambiguation page may be in order. How about moving this article to Dipping the flag? --Una Smith (talk) 04:24, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Correction. The jack-staff is the bow staff. The country flag is always carried on the stern flag staff. I have done this many times in my many years at sea.
In another article you mention the Union Jack. If you mean the British Union this is a misnomer.
It is - always - correctly - called the Union Flag.

Requested move

The result of the proposal was move to Flag dipping
. The only thing that has true consensus here is that the current title should be replaced with another. Flag dipping came late in the discussion but is the only alternative with three people commenting on it. Also we generally avoid parenthetical disambiguators where's there's an equally disambiguous natural title. The gerund form seems superior here than just "dip". Given the wide array of forms suggested, but the focus of discussion more on "anything but this", if someone thinks there is a strong reason to favor another, that can be revisited in a new discussion.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:02, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
– The flag movement does not seem to be a legitimate primary topic for "dipping". Lots of other meanings are listed in its hatnote. I just created Dipping (disambiguation) with five meanings. The current dipping article has approximately zero recent page views. Dipping is also the practice of using dipping tobacco, covered in an article that somehow gets about twenty thousand page views per month. Less surprisingly, Skinny dipping also gets about twenty thousand page view per month. The strength training exercise also gets tens of thousands of page views per month. Dipping as a treatment for sheep gets a couple of thousand page views per month. BarrelProof (talk) 21:43, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

- Support, clear lack of a primary topic. bd2412 T 00:13, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- Note: there is also Dip (dance move), which may be referred to as dipping. bd2412 T 13:55, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- Support though I would prefer Dipping (flag) Hot Stop talk-contribs 01:45, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- Some other alternative titles that I had thought about included Dipping (flag signal), Dipping (flag movement), and Flag dip. I thought it would be good to use WP:NATURAL dab rather than parenthetical dab, and I noticed that the article starts with the phrase "To dip a flag". "Flag dip" sounds a bit like some kind of preservative liquid that you might dip a flag into. Incidentally, I think it's interesting that the title of the article does not actually appear in the article. I'm open to alternatives, but convinced that it should move away from where it is – although my current suggestion remains the same at this point – that it should go to "Dipping a flag". —BarrelProof (talk) 05:08, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- I think Dipping (flag signal) would be fine. The chief concern to me is the ambiguity of the title. bd2412 T 13:56, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

- I also like the idea of the move and support a move, but I'd prefer flag dipping as natural and sliiiightly more concise. No biggie though. Red Slash 22:24, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
- Support move to flag dipping or dipping (flag). -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:32, 17 October 2013 (UTC)

Dipping flag to naval vessel
[edit]Isn't the SS Sabine Howaldt a cargo ship? If so, the example photos seem to contradict the text. Humpster (talk) 05:26, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
