Spelling of Chinese Names

[edit]

Badagnani: I concede to your moves.

Nevertheless, the issue remains to be resolved: Should Wikipedia stick to principles (the standard format for Chinese names in this case), or should it accommodate personal idiosyncrasies.

We have noticed that Li Po has become Li Bai, and Mao Tse-tung has become Mao Zedong, to name just a few of numerous such examples.

Additionally, if Qiu Xia He is supposed to be the correct spelling, it seems to be only natural to disable redirecting "He Qiuxia", "He Qiu Xia", "He Qiu-xia", "Qiuxia He", or "Qiu-xia He" to Qiu Xia He, doesn't it?

My opinion is that He Qiuxia should appear in the title, and other spellings be treated as non-standard variations and REDIRECT-ed to He Qiuxia. --Roland 00:53, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. Wikipedia tradition has generally involved article titles going with individuals' preferred romanization (even if non-standard), as in Chiang Kai-shek or Syngman Rhee. The individuals in question are all Chinese nationals living in English-speaking countries, and the names are the ones they use on their own CDs, websites, concert posters, and other publicity. As far as Qiu Xia He, I just checked and the pinyin does have her name as "He Qiuxia"; that makes perfect sense so that Chinese speakers won't be confused by which is her surname (as she doesn't elide or hyphenate her given name). I should add that I was not aware of the moves of the Li and Mao articles. Li wouldn't have had a preferred romanization (though Li Po was the most prevalent, though incorrect, pre-existing romanization), and I'm not sure about Mao's but pinyin makes sense in his case.
