Essentials

I don't know why someone added The Essentials to Solo-Albums, but it's a compilation so it shouldn't be there.

Greatest Hip Hop Artist?

The sentance, 'Regarded as one of the greatest hip hop artists' is non-NPOV and should probably read, 'regarded by MTV.com and Snoop Dogg as one of the great hip hop artists.'--67.234.209.142 (talk) 03:58, 5 May 2008 (UTC) --Your post should probably read "The sentence [...] is POV [not non-non-point-of-view] and should probably say, [and then the next part is just you being a troll]." He is on several notable lists. If you are going to say that, then you should also change the articles on 2pac, nas and jay-z. KAM grammatical errors

I'm terrible at grammar otherwise I'd fix it myself, but that entire paragraph is one sentence. I'm notorious for using run on sentences/paragraphs myself, so I'm not sure the best way to go about fixing it. It's a bit confusing to read, so if anyone has a spare minute, it could use a little editing. Tainted42 03:29, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Inconsistencies

In this page it says his album laugh now cry later has gone gold. In the album's page it says it has gone platinum. Which one is it? Wikipedia needs to be consistent.Drumac 07:36, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

The article claims that Ice Cube was born and raised in South Central but also that he attended Taft High School, which is in Woodland Hills -- pretty far away from South L.A. If that is true, how did he end up there and what were the circumstances of the move? I wonder how fellow Taft alums like Lisa Kudrow and Wilmer Valderrama managed to avoid the "gangsta" lifestyle? PatrickWB 02:33, 16 November 2007 (UTC) Its simple really. Cube didn't live a "gangsta" lifestyle. He's a gangsta rapper and he talks about stuff that was going on in South Central but Cube himself was never in a gang. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.166.189.2 (talk) 19:27, 17 August 2008 (UTC) OK, so he wasn't a gangbanger, but it still says he grew up in South Central but attended Taft. Did he move to the valley at 14? Did he just go to Taft as a Senior? Did he commute 30 miles to school everyday? Arrests?

In the lyrics to his new song Race Card, which promotes and is the theme song to his show Black and White due out in March, he says that he was arrested, and just like martha stewart, he pled innocent. Does anyone know when he was arrested, and what the charges were? his arrest record is not mentioned in the bio.. His Parents

Can someone please clear up what ihs parents did at UCLA. On some sites, people say they were UCLA professors. On npr i think he talked and said they were custodians, like working with the lawns and stuff. ~~ sp0 9/11/2006 They weren't professors, that I'm sure of. They were simply staff members of UCLA. That could mean anything--the mom may have been an admin assistant and the dad a custodian, for all we know. People have tried to discredit Ice Cube by falsely saying that his parents were UCLA professors to take away from his "ghetto credentials." I'll try to look into it to get more facts on this. Racial aspects of his music

It's been brought up on and off in various media, so the controversial racial aspects of his music should probably be at least mentioned. Most notorious is probably the threat of violence against ethnic-Korean shopkeepers in "Black Korea", although there are dozens of threats of violence against white people that are cited on and off as well. --Delirium 08:29, August 28, 2005 (UTC)

    • Calling them "threats" is an exaggeration, especially given what we know of Cube's non-criminal background. Saying that they promote highly negative (if not outright racist) views of particular groups of people is more honest.

How is no vaseline antisemitic? He said "you let a Jew break up my crew." Jerry Hella is a Jew is he not? Ice Cubes views Jews as similar to the Whites as ex-slaveholders etc. I dont know about any Jews being enslaved and working in cotton fields in the South. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.185.155.27 (talk) 09:45, 30 July 2008 (UTC) as for black korea, who the FUCK is anthony choe, and why is his essay relevent? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.71.26.11 (talk) 09:18, 24 January 2008 (UTC) It's difficult to imagine a more racist and hateful (and not to mention aesthetically terrible in every respect) song than "Cave Bitch" performed by a major recording artists. The guy makes kids' movies for chrissakes! Meanwhile, Don Imus at 3 a.m. to a 99% adult audience uses the phrase "nappy-headed ho's" and everyone--including Mr. Racial Transcendence with the racist pastor Obama--calls for Imus to have his livelihood taken away. If the author of this entry is going to bring up racism in Ice Cube's music, how can you leave out a song like "Cave Bitch," the words of which can't be interpreted as anything but racist. And Ice Cube refuses to disavow or apologize for songs like this (Terry Gross on NPR asked--timidly--if he regretted his more racially insensitive--LOL--lyrics). If the author wishes to write a complete white-wash fan gush, then why even mention "Black Korea" (a song that "some" interpreted as racist)? Whoever you are who wrote this, you're either stupid or a liar. Which is it? Sean A. Smith (Austin, Texas)

what about his name paying homage to Iceberg Slim? i think that is a pretty important thing to add... --timeheater 07:18, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

I would say only if you have a source. Ice T has often mentioned Iceberg Slim in interviews and songs but I've never heard Slim mentioned in context with Cube.
he's mentioned in "Who's The Mack", but i didnt think it was positively, sometimes Cube's hard to interpret. "...like Iceberg Slim, and all of them claiming P.I.M.P...", something like that. --AlexOvShaolin 23:01, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Muslim

According to this page:http://www.islamicaweb.com/archive/t-13644, Ice cube is muslim.

Well, should I add it to the page?????????????????????
Anyone?
Not on the basis of that page, but if you can find an authoratative source, yes. Rich Farmbrough 14:25, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Actually it already says Cube toured on Lollapalooza in 1992 and widened his fan base. Also during that that year, he converted to the Nation of Islam. Rich Farmbrough 14:38, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
Nation of Islam is *not* a recognized sect of Islam (see Wikipedia entry on Islam for more details)

Cube calls himself a "natural Muslim" so that has nothing to do with Nation of Islam and he also has denied affliating with the Nation

Cube never officially converted to the Nation. He basically just tagged along. There was some song - I forget which one - where Shorty of Da Lench Mob dissed him for claiming to be an NOI member when he wasn't (Shorty, of course, was a member of Cube's group Da Lench Mob). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 193.61.200.145 (talk) 01:01, 15 February 2007 (UTC).

Ice Cube isn't NOI or 5%. NOI is what got him interested in Islam but he never became a member only a supporter. He is aware of the various sects, agrees with the basic creed that there is One God and Muhammed is his messenger and stops there. Ice Cube is what you would call a non-practicing Muslim. $indbad (talk) 07:45, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

NPOV

Very non-NPOV. Repairing some sentances. i.e. "the album was a masterpiece of old school rap" "his lyrics were groundbreaking".

The way to usually fix that is: "The album is considered a masterpiece by many critics and fans"; "his lyrics are considered by many hip-hop historians to be groundbreaking" (not in these exact words, something like that). In these cases, it's best to have quotes from magazines, hip-hop sources---etc.---which show that a number of critics/hip-hop historians have said things like that. Anyway, there will have to be some mention of the fact that his early work is indeed widely regarded as groundbreaking and that he produced classics and even what some critics consider masterpieces in the genre. Free image request

Hi guys, I've removed the magazine cover which is currently being used as the illustrative image. Since Ice Cube is still alive, still performing, and it shouldn't be too hard to get a free image of him, the use of this magazine cover can, in no way, be fair use. It's actually a textbook example of non-fair use - don't use magazine covers unless they're really significant, say, Demi Moore posing naked while pregnant in Vanity Fair, or maybe Kanye West as Jesus on the cover of Rolling Stone. Please don't think I'm just talking and not doing anything! :) I've left notes to a bunch of flickr users asking them if they'll consider licensing their images under a free license. Hopefully they'll consider helping out - it's pretty cool to have your picture on Wikipedia, where thousands of people can see it, I think. Thanks guys, and please don't just revert me - we have to follow the rules here. Riana 17:16, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, the low res bit is good :) However, the fact remains that it is unsourced - meaning we can't verify its copyright status - and that ideally we shouldn't use a copyrighted image for the article of a living person at all. Absolutely nothing about controversy?

Not a mention about his racist lyrics against whites, Jews, and Asians? Nothing about the skit in which he kills a police officer on one of his records? Nothing about his anti catholic statements? Or his filthy words about women. Or his ignorant criticism of of blacks that try to improve themselves? I think this whole article on the subject of this human filth needs to be canned and rewritten. It's interesting how everyone forgot the Ice Cube of the 1990s and no one knows his troubling past. Well thats one-sided if I ever heard it. "This 'looser' is a waste of flesh that doesn't deserve a thousandth of what he has" would never make its way into an encyclopedia. Actually this article does mention all those things, if you took the time to actually read the whole thing. And based on his lyrics you are calling him 'human filth'? What about the terrible conditions blacks were going through (and still are) that caused him to write those lyrics?68.164.83.182 (talk) 00:36, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

His lyrics are typical of the emotion felt and the hatred against the oppression of African Americans, and, to an extent Muslims, felt all across the United States of America. They are controversial; just a passion on the expression of free speech, however, bordering on being offensive. If it was racist then it is no different to what the Ku Klux Klan does. サラは、私を、私の青覚えている。 Talk Contribs 18:32, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
I think he did take it too far at times, though. Sure, there was widespread racism/oppression but lots of people much more oppressed than Ice Cube made positive art/statements at the time he was writing stuff like "Cave Bitch" and "Horny Lil' Devil", etc. I'm actually a fan of his, but I'll admit some of his his early stuff pretty much crosses a line beyond simply reacting to the society around him.
I personally think his most offensive line was on Lethal Injection where he says "I'm killing more crackers than Bosnia-Herzegovina..." Pretty bad taste to reference a war zone like that, making light of the deaths of thousands of people on the other side of the planet who had literally nothing to do with the "crackers" he was angry with. But, yeah, it's already mentioned in the article that his lyrics caused controversy, I just think people are sometimes too quick to defend everything he's ever put on record, just because of his ethnicity. Being an African American in the early 90s didn't give you a free pass to say whatever hateful shit popped into your head. ElijahReno (talk) 07:17, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
I don't know anything about his lyrics but I do recall a rather nasty interview he gave for a UK based music paper in the early 1990's (Melody Maker or NME, I think)where he spoke favourably about violence against Koreans and Gays. (79.190.69.142 (talk) 21:54, 21 March 2010 (UTC))

Converted to Islam vs. Reverted?

I understand that Islam states that people are born into Islam automatically, so later in life when they embrace the religion, they are considered to have "reverted to Islam."

This is not encyclopedic, however, to use the term. A religion's belief is not necessarily fact, and we deal in facts here. Convert is the proper term to use, unless a reference is provided that a person once embraced the religion, fell away or converted to another belief structure, then came back to the original religion.

I see it as analogous to Mormonism. The Latter-day Saints believe that living members "perform ordinances" on behalf of the deceased, thereby converting the deceased person to the Mormon religion. They are totally committed to this idea, and believe it to be the truth implicitly. This "conversion" has been performed for all the Founding Fathers of the United States, among others. However, no one would think of putting a line in George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, or Thomas Jefferson's Wiki articles stating that they converted to the Latter-day Saints after their death. It's simply not factual.

Let's stay with "convert." It fits the facts.

Do not remove the crip category

Ice Cube was a member of the crips and so were most of NWA(except Yella and Dre). Please do not remove this because it's misleading and makes him look fake. YVNP (talk) 16:42, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Eazy E was the only bonafide gang member in NWA. Kelly Park CPT Crip. Dre and Cube grew up in Crip neiborhoods but never was put on the set. Doesn't mean Cube ain't gangsta though. $indbad (talk) 07:53, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Song History

Ice Cube actually had a record out prior to CIA's "My Posse." He and a rapper named Kid Disatser did a song under a group named the "Stereo Crew." The song was titled "She's a Scab." It was out out on a 12" vinyl single, like the CIA single. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Latino5292 (talkcontribs) 22:54, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Is Cube related to any of the Jackson 5?

i don't think so —Preceding unsigned comment added by BubbleBabis (talkcontribs) 14:15, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Ice CubeIce Cube (rapper) — With respect to WP:UCN, the fact that this article and Ice cube exist make searches a little confusing. For example, people usually don't capitalize words when searching, so if they merely type "ice cube" in the search box... Erpert (let's talk about it) 19:27, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

  • Support. To most people an Ice Cube is an ice cube, and the singer and his music are likely to be as ephemeral as thousands of other pop music singers and musicians down the years. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 09:35, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose. No need to inconvenience all those people who search for the rapper under "Ice Cube". A hatnote will help those few people who try to search for ice cubes by typing in "Ice Cube". Fences&Windows 19:50, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose. There are many article titles distinguished by capitalization, and if someone nonsensically searches for the article on ice cubes by searching for "Ice Cube," they can click the hatnote and maybe learn something about capitalization along the way. Cube writing Eazy-Duz-It

There is a sentence that states something like, Ice Cube wrote half the songs on 'NWA and the Posse' and Eazy-E's 'Eazy-Duz-It'. I own both CD's, and while Ice Cube is credited with writing 6 out of 11 tracks on 'NWA and the Posse', the writing credits for 'Eazy-Duz-It' indicate he only wrote 3 out of the 12 tracks, 'Still Talkin', 'Boyz-N-The-Hood (Remix)', and 'No More ?'s'. The article should specify that Ice Cube wrote half the tracks on NWA the Posse, but only 3 on Eazy Duz It.

SunshineOdyssey (talk) 01:51, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

You forgot to mention NWA's greatest hits albulm. Most of the songs have been released befoe on other NWA albulms except for 2 songs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.178.146.170 (talk) 02:48, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Controversy

No mention is made of IC's racism in this article. He has many songs with blatently anti-white lyrics in them. Yet this is glossed over? Should his discription in the lead paragraph include terms like "controversial" or "racist"? If not, why not? No mention is made of "Fuck da Police", a song that stirred nationwide controversy, including many editorals. There seems to be quite a double-standard: racist anti-white artists are given a complete pass on their overtly racist art, while mild white nationalist artists, such as Saga, are stamped and labeled with the harshest possible terms like "neo-Nazi" in the introduction to their articles.

You can't have it both ways and claim that there is anything neutral about Wikipedia.

This comment/quote was immediately stricken by an editor.

"No stringy haired, blonde hair, blue eyed, pale skinned buttermilk complexion, grafted, recessive, depressive, ironing board backside straight up and straight down, no frills, no thrills, miss six o'clock, subject to have the itch, mutanoid, caucasoid, white cave bitch."

OK, that is a very racist lyric, why don't we call Cube a racist artist, or "black nationalist" in the lead paragraph of the article? (This is not the only example, obviously). Further, we can't even have a section that explores this topic?

Anyone got any sources for this actually being real? All I can find are rumours.ElectricWizard 0 (talk) 20:48, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Date of Cube's departure from N.W.A.

I notice here and Eazy-E's timeline page both say he left N.W.A in January 1990, yet many sources are claiming it was 1989. I changed the date on this page one time before it was reverted. 1989 seems to be more accurate because N.W.A.'s Discogs page says Cube left that December, while their biography Allmusic claims he left in late 1989 and DJ Yella (also a member of N.W.A.) claims in this interview that he hadn't seen him since that same year. The 1989 in music page also says he left on December 23rd of that year. I also have a copy of the Spin book Alternative Record Guide which also says he left in 1989. 76.191.133.247 (talk) 22:27, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Rage Against the Machine open for Ice Cube?

I remember Rage Against the Machine opening for Ice Cube when I saw him sometime in the Spring of 1992 in Portland, OR at La Luna (aka Pine Street Theater). RATM was not a well-known band at that time, and it seems important to add this touring info if it is confirmed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.21.244.36 (talk) 06:22, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
