Hi George. It's the name of the group, I'm not sure if it stands for anything - searching the novel on Google books returns nothing to say it does... From the introduction of the group: "He had heard of SOS, the distress signal, but not this SOS." (second page of chapter two) I'll see if I can find anything more conclusive though!
