Patronymic

[edit]

The introductory warning does not apply to the name in the article's title. "Gnarr" in not a patronymic but a corruption of the middle name "Gunnar". "Kristinsson" is the patronymic, however. Asgrrr (talk) 21:05, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The entry now refers to his last name as Kristinsson, which is correct since the national registry doesn't allow for true last names. Last names or family names in Iceland are, technically, middle names. helgihg (talk) 13:55, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So how can we change the listing, warning, and ordering? I can't see how to edit the warning. Difbobatl (talk) 13:44, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the hatnote to a footnote. There's no reason for this to be at the top of the article. It's not disambiguation (which is important for navigation and should be seen immediately), it's just a minor stylistic note of little interest to most readers. A footnote is the appropriate place. Designate (talk) 00:56, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I saw that the hatnote (Template:Icelandic name) was missing and since this is an unusual case I made this:
but at the last minute I noticed the footnote and changed like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=J%C3%B3n_Gnarr&diff=559544669&oldid=557341972 but if I'm being overly pendatic just change it but please keep (at least) the comment I added as a reminder. Maybe this case is special since he doesn't really use a patronymic, but it's still an Icelandic name that means Jón (or Jón Gnarr) er preferred to Kristinsson. Do you think a hatnote is not justified in the usual cases also? comp.arch (talk) 11:06, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think a hatnote is ever the right place to explain a stylistic decision, unless the article can't be understood without it. The top of the article should be as accessible and simple as possible, it should jump immediately to explaining who the person is and get to the details later. Stacking extra content in various colors and fonts is kind of outdated, it goes back to the early 2000s when websites didn't understand design. I'm not sure a footnote is the best place either, but it's less intrusive. There have been a few discussions about this in various locations, but there's not much of a consensus. —Designate (talk) 11:49, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Allusionist episode 87, https://www.theallusionist.org/allusionist/icelandic-names , this information is incorrect. Gnarr has been accepted by Icelandic courts as a bona fide family name, heritable to Gnarr's descendants. Gnarr is now a part of the minority of Icelanders who do have a family name. Gnarr explains the process himself in the last 10 minutes of the linked podcast. I would edit this myself, but how notes and references are handled is beyond me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:547:500:2650:2CA4:FFAA:69DB:F7BD (talk) 19:24, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Would someone kindly add this to the "External Links" section in the main article, when I do it seems to be removed.

Done Not sure why it would be removed. §FreeRangeFrog 21:19, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is an RfC on the question of using "Religion: None" vs. "Religion: None (atheist)" in the infobox on this and other similar pages.

The RfC is at Template talk:Infobox person#RfC: Religion infobox entries for individuals that have no religion.

Please help us determine consensus on this issue. --Guy Macon (talk) 06:27, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
