I was the one that took the article to its DYK revision and I take issue with removing all of the winter ball information and calling it a "trim". That is BS, Báez himself has been discussing the importance that playing before his home crowd will have and went as far as criticizing the fact that he was not allowed to play last year. Keeping sourced material that details which team holds his rights there is not hurting the article. Furthermore, I hardly see how around 10k bytes of information covering four seasons is "overly long", when we have payers that have a single season summary that is 4k. From the Cubbie15fan's history at Starlin Castro and his removal of images there I can tell that he enjoys a minimalist approach, which is fine as long as it does not damage months of work. 10ks of information for four seasons is barely 2.5 ks of info per year. 208.54.44.180 (talk) 12:12, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

I certainly don't appreciate your edit summary saying this article was "vandalized". The winter league ball might be worth reinserting, but all of the details about 'a few games here, a few games there' is inappropriately excessive for Wikipedia. Well, you certainly did not care about the time that I invested while criticizing the content, removing sourced material and calling it a "trim", did you? Just reinsert the winter league content and I will go away and see the article wither away like most other baseball biographies. Jeter has one of the few decent articles here and his minor league career is around 7ks and covers three years. But since details are irrelevant, its only a matter of time until this one ends like Castro's, i.e. with only a feeble paragraph attempting to cover years of playing. While other sports provide comprehensive summaries for the amateur careers of athletes, WP:BB treats the initial stage of the professional career like an inconsequential timeframe. On the other hand, I find it funny that back when you wanted to gain credit for a DYK, keeping the 'few games here, few games there' format was fine. Let's assume Good Faith with Muboshgu's edits. There was no need to claim the edits were vandalism. Muboshgu offered a compromise of including winter league info without the game by game details that make the Minor League section overly detailed. Just because information is sourced, does not necessarily mean that it should be considered noteworthy. In general, you could infer that a professional baseball player's minor league career is not very noteable as a baseball player must meet the following criteria (WP:MLB/N) to be considered noteworthy enough to have his/her own article. Let's all take a look at the Mike Trout article. There are maybe 6 or 7 sentences about his minor league career. This article needs more than a trim. It needs a major over-haul and the removal of probably 80% or more of the trivial baggage. ```Buster Seven Talk 05:41, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Is Javy a Utility player?

1. - Javy has played 3 of the four infield positions. AFAIK, he has played only one inning at first base.
2. - Manager Maddon has said he thinks Baez could play anywhere, and even catch if needed.
3. - Except in spring training and, maybe in the minors, Javy has not played in any of the 3 outfield positions.
4. - Ask Google "Is Javier Baez a utility player" and articles from Spring Training for the 2016 season pop up, before he became a "top three' candidate for MVP.
5. - I just think calling his position "Utility infielder" in the INFO box is a limiting expression.
6. - I hear "utility player" and I hear a solid bench player who can fill-in just about anywhere but is not a starter at any one position.

I find this question really interesting, and I suppose there's no one right answer. I think the answer depends upon who is defining what it means to be a utility player and who is providing the definition. Here's some noteworthy tidbits I found online on this topic.

• The Cambridge Dictionary defines 'utility player' as: "a player in a sports team who has the ability to play in several different positions, and often plays in different positions for their club", making no distinction as to whether or not the utility player is considered to be a starter or a bench player. • Merriam–Webster doesn't have a definition for 'utility player', but the first definition for 'utility' as an adjective is: "capable of serving as a substitute in various roles or positions", with the example being an utility infielder. Source link

In comparing the number of innings Javy has spent fielding different positions as compared to other players who are widely considered to be utility players, the data doesn't pass the eye test IMO. Javy has spent over 1,500 innings at 2B and SS, and has spent over 500 innings at 3B all out of a possible 4,000 or so innings. (BRef Source). Comparatively, guys like Ben Zobrist, Marwin González, and Brock Holt have more significant splits of their innings among more positions, including the outfield.

FWIW in my opinion, I don't consider Javy to be a utility player. Maybe I could be convinced otherwise, but I see Javy as an infielder. Cubbie15fan (talk) 16:52, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Javy Baez has not established himself as a switch hitter yet.

In his five years in the MLB - and with 2,200 plate appearances - he has batted left once; he did this as a joke because a position player had pitched to him and his team was up by 7 runs. If he keeps batting left, then it'll be fair to call him a switch hitter.
