@Leakedemails: Do you have a source for 26 December? Solipsism 101 (talk) 14:39, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

yes, i linked it in the 'death' section, https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/27/entertainment/jean-marc-vallee-obit/index.html Leakedemails (talk) 14:40, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. As the quoted section in the ref says, CNN say his publicist told them it was Sunday. The rest are using the publicist's earlier statement that it was "over the weekend" (from Deadline) and a French language source states his son says it was Christmas Eve.[1] A lot of confusion. Solipsism 101 (talk) 15:13, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Radio-Canada never say he died on Christmas Eve (la veille de Noël in french, December 24). It say he died on the evening of Christmas (le soir de Noël in french, December 25). He died at a cottage in Berthier-sur-Mer always according to what his son Émile told Radio-Canada. And Deadline has updated his article also to say he died December 25 and found the following morning. Thanks. --Danielvis08 (talk) 18:50, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Google Translate failed me. Defer to your French knowledge. Deadline presently says it was likely he died on the evening. Seeming to acknowledge he could have died on the Sunday morning before his guests arrived. CNN still says December 26 (i.e. the Sunday). I would prefer to remove any date until we have one confirmed, but will wait for other comments. Solipsism 101 (talk) 18:59, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'm from Montreal and I speak french. At the news here they showed the cottage where he died at Berthier-sur-Mer. His son told he died on the evening of Christmas and his publicist told CNN he died Sunday. We know he was found the morning of the 26. I think maybe we'll have to wait for an autopsy to determine when he died in the night of the 25 to the 26. --Danielvis08 (talk) 19:11, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The CBC Radio source patched out that info. As it stands, we still have an explicit source from CNN that states his publicist told them he died on Sunday. Rusted AutoParts 20:33, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Deadline is hearing from multiple sources that the shocking death of filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée resulted from a heart attack, while at his cabin on the river outside of Quebec City, where he was preparing to receive guests the following day. So it is considered likely he passed December 25 and was found the following morning.
--NiTen (talk) 21:19, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Heart attack is only suspected at this stage. "So it is considered likely he passed December 25 and was found the following morning" is inference, his publicist very explicitly told CNN it was Sunday. Rusted AutoParts 21:25, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So to summarise, the son said it was the 25th, CNN said it was told the 26th by the publicist, and Deadline speculates it was the night of the 25th because he was found on the morning 26th. It would seem that the son's reasoning is the same one used by Deadline, but I don't know why a publicist is trusted over the son as they're both non-official sources informally telling the press. Solipsism 101 (talk) 10:10, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Because the son didn’t say the 25th, he said “Christmas night”. That doesn’t equate to it being the 25th, could easily be applicable to the early hours of the 26th. The publicist isn’t using a vague way to state when the death happened, as per CNN and WaPo, they state without any ambiguity that he died on Sunday. That’s why there’s weight given to these citations, they are not vaguely put or ambiguously phrased. Rusted AutoParts 00:24, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we don't have a direct quote of the son saying it. Rather the news outlet is telling us this info based on what the son said and it is fair to assume a news outlet is aware of the difference between Christmas night and early morning. (Variety says Saturday without attributing it to the son.) I think that the publicist and the son are relying on the body being found on the 26th to extrapolate a date of death; one thinking he died on the night, one the morning the body was found. They are both speculative, if this is so, and we should avoid taking either side. Solipsism 101 (talk) 11:38, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That still doesn’t mean stating Christmas night automatically infers a December 25th date, a lot of people still regard the very early hours of a new morning as night, so it can mean either 25th or 26th. The issue with the Variety source is they didn’t speak to anyone in connection to Vallee when publishing that article, which is again why I’m constantly citing CNN and WaPo, they specify they spoke with someone connected to him, his publicist. Regardless “I think that the publicist and the son are relying on the body being found on the 26th to extrapolate a date of death” is original research or inference, we still have citations with correspondence to people close to Vallee giving a date of death. This matter would be more complicated should the publicist had said “Vallee died this weekend and we don’t know for sure when”. The only thing that would really invalidate CNN and WaPo to me at this time would be a funeral notice or death certificate stating it was Saturday. And with that, an official family statement clarifies it was the 25th. Rusted AutoParts 18:00, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
