Singular They
The use of the singular they throughout this article to refer to Lee specifically is not appropriate for this article and is grammatically incorrect since it's being used to refer to a specific person. The subject does not control the article and we shouldn't change the conventions of English out of respect for her. We don't use ebonics for articles about subjects who use ebonics. Same principle applies here. If an editor really wants to avoid non-gender-neutral pronouns to refer to Lee specifically, they should reword the sentence to avoid the use of pronouns in general. - The second sentence sums it up: "they prefer to use gender-neutral pronouns when referring to themself." It's not our preference. —Andrewstalk 23:59, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
- What do you mean "it's not our preference"? We editors decide whether or not her biological gender is mentioned in the article. We make that decision based on encyclopedic considerations, otherwise known as "our preference". More to the point: How does accurately mentioning Jiz Lee's personal preferences as to gender pronouns mean that we shouldn't (also accurately and verifiably) mention Jiz Lee's biological gender in the article? How does one follow from the other? Her/their preference does not have a bearing on the simple fact that Jiz Lee does not possess a y-chromosome; and it's not a valid encyclopedic reason to exclude verifiable and in this particular context highly relevant information from the article. --213.168.73.216 (talk) 17:30, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
I strongly disagree, I feel that singular they is a perfectly legitimate pronoun and that in fact, using the wrong pronoun set by refering to Jiz Lee as "her" and "she" instead of using singular they is no less disrespectful than it would be to refer to a transwoman as "he". In addition to the disrespecfulness, refering to them as "she" is factually incorrect because it suggests they are of a gender which they are in fact not a member of. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wormsto (talk • contribs) 13:40, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
- The use of the singular they, in general, is heavily disputed in and itself. I am only familiar with its informal use when the subject is indeterminate. Spare me the lecture on what is "factually correct". It is only your opinion and is a disguise for what you think is "politically correct". It is just as "factual" to assign masculine and feminine pronouns based on the sex (not gender) of the subject. This discussion is also being carried on at the MOS talk page. After a search of the Wikipedia Manual of Style there is no concensus on the use of the singular "they" [1], so I have changed the instance of "he" to "they".124.197.40.136 (talk) 09:38, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
- As far as I can see, you have not changed "he" to "they" but "Lee" (that is the most neutral and correct form we can use here) to "they" (that is still, at best, a contentius use of the pronoum). There is no need to re-raise a lame, futile discussion about alternative uses of pronouns, so I have restored the "Lee", that for sure will not offend anyone (not the subject, not the LGBT community, nor the grammar).
