Succession boxes

[edit]

Contrary to what is frequently claimed, Joe Higgins is not the leader of the Socialist Party, since the Party does not have a leader. This function is carried out by what is called the National Executive Committee which consists of (as far as I know) six people of whom Joe Higgins is one. Also, it is misleading to imply that Joe Higgins suceeded Joan Burton as TD for Dublin West, since, she is still a sitting TD. Although it is true that she lost her seat the first time he was elected, she was elected again at the last election together with Joe Higgins. I would suggest deleting the succession boxes.

The leadership of the Socialist Party is carried out by the National Committee, elected annually at National Conference. The National Executive Committee is a sub-committee of the NC. BOZG (talk) 15:48, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

2007 election

[edit]

I rewrote the bit on the 2007 election; previously the article suggested that Higgins losing his seat as part of a swing from smaller to larger parties, but I'm not sure about this: PD and Labour (smaller partners in alliances) lost votes, but the Greens and Sinn Fein (nonaligned) gained. I think it is called a swing when you measure the amount of seats the smaller parties won, PD, Labour and Independents suffered, Sinn Fein bearly held on to what they had and the greens had a slight gain, when compared to the increase in seats that FG got and FF managed not to get too badly hit, i'd say its safe to say its a swing away from the smaller parties Holeinthehead 12:14, 02 June 2007 (BST)
Is there any indication of who is going to succeed to his seat as an MEP? PatGallacher (talk) 21:39, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is an RfC on the question of using "Religion: None" vs. "Religion: None (atheist)" in the infobox on this and other similar pages.

The RfC is at Template talk:Infobox person#RfC: Religion infobox entries for individuals that have no religion.

Please help us determine consensus on this issue. --Guy Macon (talk) 17:38, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Still in politics?

[edit]

In the lede, I altered "former...politician" to "politician", given that the text of the article closes with a citation of Higgins saying he would "remain in politics in a different capacity" and that, unless I have failed to see it, there is no statement of his retirement.
