Article is mis-spelling of the governor's name[edit]

MelanieN Not familiar with what admins are in California, but I think you are. I'm not sure enough of California history to make a judgement call on this. The State of California lists this governor's last name as having only one "L". Governors of California - John McDougal. And, apparently, the National Governor's Office spells it with only one "L".NGA If this is correct, would you like to move the page? — Maile (talk) 19:33, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Maile, thanks for the ping. Verrry interesting! I think we can rely on the Library of the State of California to get it right so I will make the corrections. The error goes all the way back to the article's creation as a stub in 2004, although the stub's creator hedged a little.[1] Somebody removed the hedge without explanation in 2007[2] and it's been that way ever since. @MelanieN: Obviously, I went to the correct admin here. Inspired by the WIR Dec 2017 push for "First Ladies", I caught it by working on a sandbox idea on a list of First Ladies of California, like I had done for List of First Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas. Same thing happened to his sister-in-law, Frances Harriet Whipple Green McDougall. At least they got the name of his brother the admiral right! I can see this is going to take a while. --MelanieN (talk) 20:30, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think families in the 19th century weren't always sure of the spelling of their own last names. I run across this situation at times when researching people of that era. Sometimes they are buried in the same cemetery, with different spellings on their names, but the same family. — Maile (talk) 22:38, 25 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's what I've been finding. Frances is quite well documented as McDougall. His father and several of his brothers seem to have spelled it McDougall, and I even saw a letter from Charles McDougall signed "C.Dougall". But the sources seem pretty consistent with one "L" for him and his brother the admiral, who are probably the best known/best documented. I thought this kind of optional last name spelling went out with Shakespeare! Anyhow I think I now have it clarified and sourced as well as I can.
